Description

J. J. MCLANII, oFsAenroWN, ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. 78,809, dated June 9, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN GHURNS.
@te Stimuli mmh in in time tettas rtent me enlargment tf tigt tame TO ALLVHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, J. J. MGLANE, of Sagetown, inthe county of Henderson, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churns; and do hereby declare that the :following is a p full', clear, and'exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon. v
Figure 1 represents a side elevation. Figure 2, a horizontal section. Figure 3, a view of the dasher, and its mode of connection to the box, and Figure 4 represents a view of the .dasher, with its arms placed in an angular manner.
In the annexed drawings,.makinff a part of this specification, A represents a vessel, made -with a curved bottom, and supported upon suitable legs.
The bottom of the vessel A is made of two bent plates of metal, and attached to the sides thereof, as shown,-
so as to make achamber between them, in which cold or warm water may be poured, to regulate the temperature ofthe cream in the vessel A. A spout,f, leads into the chamber, between the bottom plates B end C, through which the water may be poured in or out.
DgD represent shafts, made with a recess or dent in one end, in which the point of the setscrew y fits, and with a tongue er projection on the' opposite end, to tit in the groove of the journal j.
The shafts D Dare made just long enough to. t between the sides of the vessel A.
Paddles or agitator-s H H are loosely secured to the shafts D D', for the purpose of agita-ting or churning the cream, by means of the sleeves or thimbles D.
L represents the journal-bearing, secured to one side of the vessel A, and made in the form shown, and j represents the journal, adjusted and tting therein.
It will be seen that, when the shaft D is adjustedwit'h one end resting in the groove of the journal j, and pressed againstthelsame by means of the set-screw g, said journal will make a perfect joint or valve, so as to prevent any leakage whatever.
The shaft D is suspended and works on the journal j and screw y, Vwhich form the journals for said shaft.
L L represent gear-wheels, secured to and on the outer end of the journalsjj, which mesh with and are operated by thc wheel K, which is provided with a crank, to which'the power to drive this machine is applied.
The agitators H H are loosely ,adjusted on theshaft D', sc as to be set at any angle with each other, when they are tightened by means of 4a collar-nut on one end of the shaft D. p
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The arrangement o f the box A, with metal bottom B C, two cross-shafts D D, having movable arms II H, and adjustable by the journals jand bearings t, the several parts being constructed and operating substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 21st daiy of March, 1868.
J. J. MQIIANE.
