  • This invention relates to new and useful improvements in mechanical arms or devices for use in connection with wiring of various kinds; and it consists in a cross-arm having means for holding the same securely to the top of a telephone or other pole and having notches to receive the series of line-wires for the purpose of holding the same while an old arm is being removed andanew onereplaced, means being provided for holding straight line-wires or wires at a curve or at an angle.

MECHANICAL ARM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 7 87,839,. dated April 18, 1905.
Application filed November 1'7, 1904. Serial No. 233,207.
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, TILLIAM H ENRY ERNST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomington, in the county of Monroe and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Arms; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in mechanical arms or devices for use in connection with wiring of various kinds; and it consists in a cross-arm having means for holding the same securely to the top of a telephone or other pole and having notches to receive the series of line-wires for the purpose of holding the same while an old arm is being removed andanew onereplaced, means being provided for holding straight line-wires or wires at a curve or at an angle.
The invention consists in various details of construction and in combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, 'form a part of this application, and in which- Figure 1 is a view showing the application of my apparatus to a pole and illustrating the manner in which the line-wires are held by the cross-arm of the apparatus while an old arm is being replaced by a new one. Fig. 2 is a view showing the manner of application of the :mparatus for holding line-wires at a curve or at an angle, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the mechanical arm.
Reference'now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a crossarm having series of slots E in the upper edge thereof and slots F in the lower edge for the reception of line-wires, which are temporarily held while the cross-arm of a pole is being replaced. Securely bolted or otherwise fastened to said cross-arm A is a V-shaped member D, having a sharp edge D, adapted to cut into and be securely held upon the top of a pole, as illustrated in Fig. 1, of the the drawings. Said V-shaped member has right-angled portions, which bring the sharp edges thereof in a plane parallel to the vertical faces of the cross-arm in order to allow a sufficient space to intervene between the crossarm and the part which is made to engage the top of the pole. Angled arms G are bolted or otherwise secured to said V-shaped member and are positioned one opposite the other and are designed to engage over a cross-arm of a pole immediately above the one which is to be replaced. In adapting the apparatus for use in connection with curves or angles in line-wires .I provide a strap K, having loops K at its ends, which are designed to engage the hooks N in the ends of said crosspiece. Said strap may be held from sagging from the cross-piece intermediate its ends by means of the straps O, which pass about the cross-arm and hold the strap K, as shown in the drawings. Secured to the strap K are series of stirrups Q, to which snap-hooks J are connected, and secured to said snap-hooks J are series of straps L, said straps being of different lengths and carrying hooks J at their lower ends. by the provision of said straps of ditferent lengths and having snaphooks, as shown, means is provided for engagement with line wires at curves or angles, as will be readily understood and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings. In applying my apparatus to poles the V- shaped sharpened edge of said member is driven into the top of the pole, which will in sure the cross-piece being securely hold while a cross-arm is being replaced and enables the operator to remove the wires from the crossarm upon the pole and allow them to rest in the notches upon the upper edge of the apparatus, and the several wires are thus kept clear of one another, while the arms of the operator are free and at liberty for use in removing the old cross-arm and attaching another, after which the wires may be removed from the apparatus and fastened to the insulators of the new cross-arm, thus dispensing with the services of an extra person commonly employed to assist in replacing cross-arms upon poles. In utilizing the apparatus at curves or angles the strap K is brought into play and the various line-wires are engaged by the different-length straps having snap-hooks thereon, as will be readily understood.
While I have shown a particular construction of apparatus illustrating my invention, it will be understood that I may vary the same as to details, if desired, without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A mechanical arm for use in connection with poles for replacing crossarms, comprising a bar having slots in the edge thereof designed to temporarily hold the line-wires, and a metallic bracket member having a sharp edge adapted to cut into tlie top of a .pole, as set forth.
2. A mechanical arm for use in connection with poles for replacing cross-arms, comprising a bar having slots in the edge thereof designed to temporarily hold the line-wires, a metallic bracket member having a sharp edge adapted to cut into the top of a pole, angled arms secured to said bracket member adapted for engagement with the cross-piece mounted upon a pole, as set forth.
3. A mechanical arm for use in connection with poles for replacingcross-arms, comprising a bar having slots in the edge thereof designed to temporarily hold the line-wires, a i
metallic bracket member having a cutting edge in a plane parallel with the plane of the vertical faces of said bar and designed to cut into the top of a pole, and arms projecting from said bracket member and adapted for engagement with the cross-piece of a pole, as set forth.
4. A mechanical arm for use in connection with poles for replacing cross-arms, comprising a bar having slots in the edge thereof designed to temporarily hold the line-wires, a metallic bracket member having a sharp edge adapted to cut into the top of a pole, a strap secured to the ends of said bar, stirrups secured to said strap and a series of straps of different lengths and provided with snaphooks at their ends, designed to engage said stirrups. as set forth.
5. A mechanical arm for use in connection with poles for replacing cross-arms, comprising a bar having slots in the edge thereof designed to temporarily hold the lim-wires, and a metallic bracket member having a sharp edge adapted to cut into the top of a pole, hooks secured to the ends of said bar, a strap having bails secured thereto, the end bails of said strap adapted for engagement with said hooks, a series of straps of different lengths, and snap-hooks at the ends thereof for engagement with said bails, as set forth.
