SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 787,606, dated April 18, 1905.
Application filed April 14, 1904; Serial No. 203,062- I To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES CRAWFORD AN- DERSON, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Victoria, county of Victoria, Province of British Columbia, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Preserving-Jars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to jars and jar-closures.
The use of tin cansor tins for preserving foods is often attended with dangerous consequences, due to the formation of poisonous compounds within the food. The metal of the cans often enters into the reaction which produce these deleterious compounds. For these reasons the use of canned foods, and especially those containing acid, is attended with considerable risk. Metallic cans are used in the capacity mentioned on account of their inexpensive nature and the fact that they may be hermetically sealed very cheaply As is well known to persons familiar with the business of canning, it is necessary that jars or cans containing any preserves should be hermetically sealed.
The object of this invention is to produce a jar having a cover with a fastener adapted to insure perfect tightness, whereby the ar may be hermetically sealed, the devices being at the same time of simple construction and inexpensive.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter, and definitelyset forth in the claims.
In the drawings, which fully illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective of a jar, representing the cover as ap lied to the same. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of t e upper portion of this jar, representing the arrangement of the parts of the fastening devices, the same being represented in released position in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a plan of the jar with the cover applied to the same.
Throughout the drawings and specification the same numerals of reference denote like parts.
Referring more particularly to the parts, 1 represents the body of the jar, which is preferably of common cylindrical form, and this body is closed above by a suitable cover 2. These parts ma be made of glass, china, or similar -materia. Near its upper edge the body 1 is provided with a pair of oppositelydisposed lugs 3, each of which lugs presents a substantially rectangular outer face or cheek 5, which is inclined with respect to the body of the can and substantially tangent to the rim 'or upper edge of the body. In this mannerthe lower portions of these lugs are made to project, and upon their under sides they are concave, so as to form recessed shoulders 6 fora purpose which Will appear hereinafter.
The upper face of the cover 2 is provided with transverse channels or grooves 7, the same being disposed at equal distances from the center line of the cover, as indicated. These grooves 7 are for the purpose of facilitating the application of the fastening device or fastener 8. This fastening device comprises a pair of oppositely-disposed bars 9, which occupy the said grooves 7, as indicated, projecting at their extremities beyond the edge of the cover, at which point they are formed with eyes 10, the axes whereof are horizontally disposed, as-shown, in order to receive laterally-disposed shanks 1 1, which are integral with a looped lever 12. Beyond the eyes 10 the shanks 11 are formed into offset extensions 13, and these extensions are received by eyes 14, formed at the extremities of a yoke 15. The yoke 15 is preferably of substantially the form shown, presenting a horizontal body 16, adapted to be received under one of the shoulders 6, the said body having inclined upward extensions 17, which have the eyes 14 formed at the extremities thereof. It should be observed that the extensions 13 are offset in a direction opposite would be applied in the relation shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the horizontal extensions 16 being received under the shoulders 6, whereupon the depression of the lever 12 would operate to draw the yokes 15 tightly against the shoulders 6 in such a manner as to clamp the cover upon the jar, the lever 12 coming to rest when pressed against the inclined faces or cheeks 5, as indicated in the full lines in Fig. 2 and also as shown in Fig. 1.
A sealing ring 18, of rubber or other suitable material, is disposed intermediate of the upper edge of the jar and an annular projecting flange 19 of the cover.
The jar described in connection with its closure constitutes an effective and simple means for preserving foods of all kinds, at the same time preventing any possibility of contamination by reason of the fact that the jar is formed of a non-metallic material which would not be attacked by acidulated contents.
While I have shown inthe accompanying drawings the preferred form of my invention, it will be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise form shown, for many of the details may be changed in form or position without affecting the operativeness or utility of my invention, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such modifications as are included within the scope of the following claims or of mechanical equivalents to the structures set forth.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination, a jar presenting projecting shoulders, a cover, a fastener adapted to clamp said cover upon said jar and having yokes adapted to be received under said shoulders, said yokes having eyes, a lever having shanks, and means for rotatably supporting said shanks, said shanks having offset extensions passing through said eyes.
2. In combination, a jar having laterallydisposed shoulders, a cover above said ar, a fastener adapted to clamp said cover upon said jar and comprising laterally-disposed bars lying upon said cover, said bars having eyes in the extremities thereof, levers having shanks rotatably mounted in said eyes, said shanks having offset extensions beyond said eyes, and yokes attached to said offset extensions and adapted to be received under said shoulders.
3. In combination, a jar having oppositelydisposed lugs at the upper edge thereof, said lugs presenting inclined outer faces and shoulders at the under sides thereof, a cover, a pair of transversely-disposed bars having eyes at the extremities thereof adjacent to the sides of said lugs, yokes adapted to be received under said shoulders and having eyes substantially alining with said first eyes, and levers having shanks rotatably mounted in said eyes, said shanks having offset extensions, said levers being adapted to fold down upon said inclined faces to clamp said cover to said jar. d
4. In combination, a jar having oppositelydisposed lugs at the upper edge thereof, said lugs presenting inclined outer faces and concave shoulders therebelow, a cover disposed above said jar and having transverse channels in the upper face thereof, bars lying in said channels and having extremities with eyes formed therein lying adjacent to the sides of said lugs, yokes adapted to be received under said concave portions and also having eyes substantially in alinement with said first eyes, and levers having laterallydisposed shanks passing through said eyes, said shanks having offset extensions.
