This invention relates to cultivator attachments for plows. o The object of the invention is to enable an ordinary bulltongue plow to be converted into a cultivator by simply attaching thereto an auxiliary beam carrying earth-engaging implements.

5 .-\nother object of the invention is to provide an attachment of the class referred to which shall possess superior advantages in point of simplicity, durability, and general etliciency.

o \Yith these and other ends in view, which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts, which will be 3 hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and pre ferred form of embodiment of the invention, it being, however,

understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited. but that changes, alterations, and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention and without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the efficiency of the same.

In said drawings, Figure l is a side elevation showing a plow equipped with the improved attachment. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 2 Q in Fig. 1.

The improved attachment comprises a Hat strip or bar of iron or steel 1, the central portion of which is bent or twisted so as to form a downwardly and forwardly inclined loop 2,

posed approximately in the same horizontal plane. The extremities of the arms 3 and l are bentor twisted so as to formdownwardly and forwardly extending feet or standards 5 and 6, each of which is perforated for the passage of a bolt T, by means of which cultivator-blades 8 are secured in position upon the said standards.

The device is adapted to be attached for operation to the bifurcated stock or standard 2) of an ordinary plow, as shown in Fig. l, where 10 designates the plow-beam and 11 one of the handles upon the near side of said beam.

12 and 13 are the bolts by means of which the standard is connected with the beam, said standard being provided in the usual manner with perforations 1 t for the passage of a bolt 1) in order to enable the standard to be properly adjusted with relation to the beam. The standard carries the earth-engaging implement 15, which is secured thereto by means of the heel-bolt 16.

In operation the auxiliary bar or beam 1 is adjusted, by means of the loop 2, upon the standard 9, said loop being made of a proper size to lit neatly upon the standard. To retain the auxiliary beam in position upon the standard, a cuff or holder l? is employed, said cuff consisting of a plate 18, adapted to lit between the side members 1%) 15) of the plowstandard and provided at its front end with a downturned lip 20, adapted to engage the front side of the lip 2, and at its rear end with a downturned plate 2L of sullicient width to engage the rear side of the plow-standard. The lip 20 and the plate .21 are provided with perforations 22 for the passage of a bolt 23, whereby the device is firmly secured in position, said bolt being also extended through a perforation in the loop 2 of the auxiliary beam '1. The cuff or holder 1b, is preferably constructed of steel or material sutticiently resilient to permit the lip 20 when the bolt 23 is tightened to be compressed upon the front side of the loop 2, thereby causing the attachment to be retained in position with the utmost scourity and in such a manner as to prevent lateral swaying or wabbling when the device is in operation.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood. The construction is extremely simple and inexpensive, and it will be noticed that the edge of the strip or bar constituting the auxiliary beam is exposed to the line of strain at all points, thereby enabling the device to resist any strain to which it may reasonably be subjected.

By the use of this improved attachment an ordinary plow may be quickly transformed into a cultivator for hilling up rows of plants, for eradicating weeds, and the like. Owing to its lightness and the ease with which it may be handled, it is especially fitted for sidehill work.

WVhen not required to be used, the device may be readily separated from the plow, and the latter does not require to be prepared for the reception of the attachment by perforating the standard thereof for the reception of the bolts and the like, whereby it would be unnecessarily weakened.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is r 1. In combination with a plow having a bifurcated standard, of an auxiliary beam having a loop externally engaging said standard and aholder fitted between the side members of the standard, said holder having a downturned lip engaging the front side of the loop and a downturned plate engaging the rear side of the standard; and connecting means.

2. The combination of a plow having a bifurcated standard, an auxiliary beam having a loop externally engaging said standard, a resilient cuff constituting a holding device, said cuff including a body fitted between the members of the standard, a downturned lip engaging the front side of the loop and a downturned plate engaging the rear side of the standard, and a connecting-bolt.
