Description
No. 787,312. PATENTBD APR. 11, 1905. A. V. SILER. SCREEN.
NTTED STATES Patented April 11, 1905.
AARON V. SILER, OF NENVARK, OHIO.
SCREEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 787,312, dated April 11, 1905.
Application filed December 3,1904. Serial No. 235,338.
To /w//om if mfr/'l/ colmar/L:
Be it known that 1, Aauox V. Smau-1.a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Licking' and State of Ohio, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Screens; and I declare the following to bea full. clear, and exact description of the same. such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to thtx accompanying drawings, and to letters and figures of reference marked thereon. which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is' a front elevation of a window, showing my invention as applied thereto with screen lowered. Fig. 2 is a similar view showingscrcen raised. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section of' the invention, partly broken away and on a larger scale. Fig. i is a detail view of one of the brackets d.
This' invention relates to automatic roll wimlow-screens; and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
ln the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the letter designates a window-frame having' the sill 7), and c represents the lower sash. To the sill are attached in any suitable manner brackets for the fixed shaft or bearing-rod l; of a rollerf, which extends the width of the window in the manuel' indicated. This roller is preferably of hollow form, consisting' of longitudinal slats y, secured to the heads /a, in which are made the bearings whereby the roller turns on the shaft ln order to attach the shaft to the brackets, the latter are usually made with the elongated slats m for the flattened ends ,n of said shaft, which may be easily sprung into place and as readilyremoved. The roller is provided with one or more coiled springs s, which are seated around the shaft and attached thereto by one end, the other end of the spring being attached to the roller, preferably to a middle bracing or brace-head i. These springs are tensimi-springs designed to turn the roller.
To the lower bar of the sash is attached a face-strip w, which extends along said bar to the side strips of the sash-bearing ofl the window-frame, and its face is flush with the faces of said side strips.
To the 'face-strip is secured the upper edge of the flexible screen or curtain .2', and a linishing-strip l' is secured along' the edge of the screen to the face-strip w.
The screen is made wide enough to extend over on the side strips w of the window-frame and long enough for attachment by its lower end to the roller f. Extending across the screen and attached thereto on the inside surface are the transverse stiff lining' or bracing strips 3, and to these is secured the vertical spring-steel coil-strip 2, the upper end of which is fastened to the window-sash and the lower portion of which is coiled around the rollerf.
lVhen the lower sash is raised, the screen will follow it, spreading over the opening below the sash in such a manner as to prevent the ingress of flies and other insects of like character. The spring-steel coil-strip having its bend toward the sash presses the transverse strips, and thereby the screen, against the window side strips, so as to form sufficiently close joints at the side edges. lVhen the sash is lowered, the roller automatically takes up the screen-curtain, which is braced and guided by the spring-steel coilstrip.
Having described the invention, what l claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
isv
l. The combination with a roller, its shaft and tension-spring, of a screen-curtain attached to the roller, the transverse screenbraces, and the vertical coil-bracing-spring strip substantial y as specified.
Q. The combination with a window-sash and the Aface-strip thereon, of the roller, its shaft and spring, the clu'tain-screen, its transverse braces. and the vertical coil-bracingspring strip, substantially as specified.
1n testimony whereof Iaflix mysignature in presence of two witnesses.
