IMPROVEMENT IN WINDOW-SCREENS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,335, dated February 29, 1876; application filed January 29, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,J1vo. S. WILLIAMSON, of Ringoes, in the county of Hunterdon and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Insect- Screens for Windows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear. and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the; accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective, and Fig. 2 is a broken vertical longitudinal section, of my invention. 7
The object of my invention is to provide an insect-screen which can be readily applied to any Window without the employment of ribs or strips, which can be inserted and withdrawn at any position, which can be adjusted at any altitude, and which will not injure or deface the frame to which it is applied.
My invention, accordingly, consists ofarect angular frame or sash, having its central opening covered with netting, either fibrous or metallic. The sides of this frame are plowed or grooved for the passage of studs or screws secured to the window-frame, the edges being also provided with material of a soft or yielding nature, so as to prevent injury to said window-frame. A look or bolt of suitable construction is also provided to enable the screen to be retained at any height to which it may be adjusted.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A represents a window-frame, having an upper sash, B, and lower sash G, of the usual or any suitable construction. D D are studs or screws, inserted at suitable distances along both sides of the frame A, as shown. E represents a rectangular frame, upon which is stretched gauze or netting-F. The sides of said frame are plowed or grooved, as shown at e, for the passage of the studs or screws D. Said sides are also cut away or slotted, as shown at c, for they lateral passage of said screws or studs in inserting or withdrawing the screen from the window. G is a bolt, by means of which the screen may be adjusted to cover the opening left in the window by drawing down the upper sash. H shows a strip of rubber, cloth, or other soft material, folded so as to puff, and tacked or otherwise attached to the edge of the frame E. The
object of this material is to fill'up completely the space between the edges of the frame E and adjacent sides of the frame A, it being necessary to leave some space in order that the screen will move readily and easily. This material permits such easy movement, at the same time, preventing any rubbing which would injure the window-frame, and avoiding leaving any crack or crevice.
-The advantages of this screen are as follows:' First, it is cheaply and easily 'con-' structed, and may be readily applied to any window without removing either of the sashes. Secondly, it requires the provision of no ribs or strips-about a dozen ornamental screws, which may be inserted inthe window-frame without defacement of or injury to the latter, being all that is required for its attachment to a window. Thirdly, it will serve to close the opening left by raising thelower windowsash or the opening left by depressing the upper sash alternately, thus serving as an adjustable screen for day and night, the lower window-sash being raised during the day, and the upper one lowered by night. Fourth, it can be inserted or withdrawn at any altitude, and is a complete protection against the entrance of insects.
What I claim as my invention is 1. The frame E, having its sides plowed or grooved at c, and provided with gauze or netting F, in combination with the studs or screws D, inserted in the frame A, substantially as shown and described.
2. The frame E, having grooves e and slots 6, for the lateral passage of the studs D, substantially as shown and described.
3. In combination with the window-frame A and sliding frame E, the studs or screws D, arranged in vertical lines for the retention and sliding of said frame E, substantially as shown and described.
4. In combination with a window-frame, A, and sliding screen-frame E, the folded rubber or cloth guard-strip H, attached to the sides of the latter, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
