Description
PATRICK DOLAN, or JERSEY- CITY, NEW JERSEY.
Lctters-PatentlV'o. 78,726, dated Jame 9, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT I IN TAlILORS RULES.
flilgr Sflptalt marsh in iit'flgttt items gamma mating and at its smut. I
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY oo'nonnm I Be it known that I, PATRICK DOLAN, of Jersey Oity,.in the county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and improved Pantaloon-Measuring Rule; and I do h'erebydeclare that the following'is a full, clear, andexact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art .to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. 1
This invention has for its object to furnish a simple and easy wayt'or obtaining thecorrect measurement for gentlemens pantaloons, so that no mistake can be easily made in the length or other measurements.
And the invention consists in an extension-rnle with a measuring-tape attached thereto, as I will proceed to describe.
Figure -1 represents the rule applied for ascertaining the correct length of the legs of. the pantaloons.
Figure 2 represents the form of the rule when not extended, and with the tape attached. Figure 3.is a crossrse'ction through the line of fig. 2, showing the method ofattaching the two parts'of the rule. r 7
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. The rule A is made in two parts, B and O,'which are claspedtogether by metallic bands or clasps, D and E, as seen in the drawing. p
The edges of the part B are grooved, asseen in fig; 3, and the clasp E is so formed that its angular ends slide in the grooves of B, while it is itself attached'to O. i l
The clasp D, at'the upper end of the part C, has also angular-ends, which enter the grooves, and the rule is guided thereby'and held together when it-is extended, as seen in the drawing, by the screw G.
F represents thc-ihead-piece.
H is the tape, which is pivoted to the head-piece, as seen.. 7
The rule and the tape are graduated or marked ofiinto inches,'and figured accordingly. The rule is applied as seen in the drawing.
The head-piece is placed firmly-in the crotch, and the rule is extended to the floor, or as much above the floor. as may be desired. p
When in this position all the other measurements for the pantaloons are taken with the tape and noted in theusual manner.
7 Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The rule, consisting of the parts A O, grooved in each edge, to receive the ends of the clasps D E, the latter being provided witha set-screw, G, all constructed and arranged to operate in the manner-and for the purpose substantially as herein set forth.
2. In combination with the adjustable rule A O, I claim the head-piece F, having a curved upper surface, and the pivoted tape H, snbstantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The adjustable rule A 0, provided with the head-piece F, shaped substantially as shown, and the tapemeasure H, the whole arranged substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
i P. W. DOLAN.
