IMPROVEMENT IN TAILOR-S SQUARES.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY conceals:
Be it known that I, DANiEL TIERNEY, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a-new and improved Tailors T-Square; .and 'I'do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had. to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The drawing represents a plan orto'p view-of my improved T-square.
This invention relates to a new-instrument, which is designed to facilitatethe drawing of designs upon cloth, in obedience to actual or computed measurements.
The invention consists in the'use of a'T-square, the bar or ruler of which is pivoted to the cross-piece The bar is provided with an index-hand, moving over an are, marked on the cross-piece with a series of sub-' divisions, which indicate the angle of the bar to produce certain lines for the production of certain designs of garments. The straight edge of the cross-piece is also provided with marks, which regulate the position of the cross-piece on certain lines The bar is provided with a series of graduated scales, to facilitate themeasuring of distances from the cross-piece. i v i 4 A, in the drawing, represents the cross-piece of a T-square. B is the bar or ruler, pivoted to the cross- .piece. On the bar B isdmarked a division, a,showing inches, 'and their parts, and two or more graduated scales,
6c, are also marked thereon, of which one may show the prepared arm-measurement, the other that of the shoulder.
On-the pivoted end of the bar ,3 is a pointer, cl, which shows, on a series of marks, e e, that are made on the face of the cross-piece, the required position of the bar. Thus', for example, if the breast-line of a coat is taken for a base, and the shoulder .wants to be measured, the bar is, as in the drawing, held at right angles to the crosspiece. Then an arc'is described, with the distance from breast to neck for a radius, and, as soon as the pointer (2 reaches the mark 8, the bar is stopped, and the shoulder-point is found.
The various other marks, e, serve to produce the ieqnired angles for various other portions of garments. ()n the-straight edge of the cross-piece are also shown marks,f f, which regulate the position ofthe cross-piece. Thus, for example, when the line from the breast to the neck has been drawn, and the direction of and distance to the arm-pit is to be found, the cross-piece is, as shown by red lines, laid with its straight edge against the perpendicular 1ine,-and with the markf against the point of neck previously found, and, when then thcbar is turned, to bring the pointcrnpon the mark e, and the requisite distance is measured, the pointy will he found, which gives the exact position of the arm-pit. The various other marks, e, serve to regulatethe position of the cross-piece for finding other points and positions... The marks e may, if desired, be marked onthe back end of the bar 13, in which case a pointer will be fixed to the cross-piece.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Atailors T square, consisting of the crosspiecc A,.to which the bar or ruler B is pivoted, the bar having Suitable graduated scales, (1 b c, and a pointer, d, or its equivalents, and the cross-pieccbeing provided with marks 6, or their equivalents, on'its surface, and with marksfon its front edge, all arranged as set forth, for
the purpose specified.
' DANIEL TIERNEY.
