Patented April 11, 1905.
PATENT @Fisica ARTHUR 'FING-LEAF, OF AL'IUN, ILLINOIS.
SCAFFOLDING.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 787,233, dated April 11, 1905. Application tiled December Z7, 1904. Serial No. 238,423.
in /r/m/l/y ff l/lf//j/ former/1,:
Be it known that I, An'rnUn 'Ii'NeLniufy residing at Altona, in the county of Knox and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scaffolding, of which the following is a specification.
.\l,v invention relates to Certain new and useful improvements in portable scaffolding; and it more particularly relates to that class of scaffolding construction for use on gable-roofs for building chimneys or for plaster-ing, paper-hanging, etc.; and it more particularly seeks to provide a device of this character of a very simple. and economical construction which will readily serve its intended purposes and which can be easily and cheaply constructed.
ienerically my invention includes a transverse section adapted to rest across the edge of the roof and carrying right-angled T-joint-s at each end into which a short tubular section is secured and vertical rod members having pronged ends to engage the roof and adapted to pass through the tubular sections and the T-joints, the rods having a plurality of apertures, and the short tubular sections each have an aperture to receive transverse pins, by means of which the tubular sections can be adjusted up or down on the rod members. Yl'he platform-boards are adapted to be laid across the transverse tubular boards in the usual manner.
\\'ith other objects in view, which will be hereinafter more clearly understood, the invention also consists in certain details of construction, novel arrangement, and combination of parts, all of which will be described in detail and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the acmnnpairying drawings, in which-- I `igure I is a perspective view of my invention applied for use. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the rod members, Fig. I is an enlarged .sectional view of the transverse rod members and its T-joint ends. Fig. is a perspective view thereof. Fig. 6 is a side elevation showing my invention in another position.
Fig. T is a diagrammatic plan i view of a slightly-modilied form of my inj ventiou.
i Referring now to the accompanying drawl ings, in which like numerals and letters of I reference indicate like parts in all of the ligl ures, I designates the transverse tubular rods, I which in practice are. preferably about six feet llong and constructed of three-quarter-inch l piping. At each end of the pipe I is secured l a tubular T-joint 2, into one end of which the j short pipe-section P is screwed, and in pracl tice this pipe-section is preferably six inches j long and may be of three-rplarter-inch tubj ing. The short pipe-section 3* is apertured to i, receive the securing-pin m, as shown.
'-I designates an elongated rod member constructed of soft steel, which is adapted to pass through the tubular section 3 and the T- joint to allow for proper adjustment of the parts, and these rod members I are each provided with apertures I to receive the securing-pin .1', which locks the tubular section 3 and the rod member I together when the parts are in their properly-adjusted position. At the lowex end each rod I is provided with a Yforked member I", with prong ends to engage with the roof.
So far as described the manner in which my invention operates is best explained as follows: 'Ihe rods I are laid across the edge of the roof on either side of the chimney and the pins .r withdrawn until the rod I rests lirmly on the roof with its prong end in engagement therewith, as shown in Fig. Iof the drawings` after which the pin .r is inserted to lock the pins in their proper position. The platforml boards are then laid across the trestle in the manner shown in Fig. .I when the apparatus is ready for use.
By constructing my invention as shown and described the same may be used in building chimneys located on the side of the ridge of the roof, as shown in Fig. i5.
W'hen desired, I can form the joint Q torei ccive the connecting-rods for joining the j separate trestles together to form a secure j brace therefor.
j From the accompanying description, taken i in connection with the accompanying dravings, it is thought the complete construction, operation, and advantages of my invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which it appertains.
l am aware that trestle-Work and scaffolding have heretofore been provided for use in connection with chimney building, and l do not broadly claim such construction; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a scaolding construction of the character stated, a trestle comprising a transverse tubular bar, T-heads at each end of said bar, short tubular sections secured to said T-heads, rods passing through such tubular sections and said T-heads, said rods having a plurality of apertures, said short tubular sections each having an aperture, securing-pins adapted to pass through said apertures, said rod-sections each having their lower ends provided with prongs for entering the roof, said transverse tubular1 sections and said rod members being so arranged as to form a supporting member for holding the platform-boards substantially as shown and for the purposes described.
ARTHUR TINGLEAF.
