TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JULIO H. RAE, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented a new and improved Kiln for Drying Lumber, Peat, Zoe; and I do hereby declare the following to be' a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will. enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which drawing-- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical section of this invention. 7

This invention relates to a kiln for drying lumber, peat, grain, fruit,,or other materials or articles, and'the invention consists, among other things, in the arrangement of a corrugated metallic roof and lining at the sides of the kiln, in combination with suitable gutters leading out of the kiln. Itconsists, further, in the arrangement of one or more wells, to be filled with water, in such a manner that the vapors rising from the water contained in the well or wells will continually supply a sufi'icie'nt quantity of moisture to prevent checking and cracking in the lumber, peat, or other material to be dried.

lhis lining extends throughout the interior of the kiln, and it is provided with a door, I), through which the material to be dried is introduced, and with a door, 0, which leads to the furnace, B.
This furnace is constructed in any desirable manner, and it connects with one or more drums, C, of sheet metal, or other good conductor (if heat, so that a large radiating-surface is obtained. The gases and products of combustion, after passing from the furnace into the radiating-drum or drums. escape through the smokestack, D.
Over the furnace, B, and extending throughout the interior of the kiln, is the shelf or platform E, which serves to support the material tobc dried, and which may be constructed in various different ways, according to the nature of the material to be dried.
The moisture is driven out of the material to be dried in the form of vapors, and these vapors, on striking the corrugated-metal roof and lining, will condense, and the water resulting from this condensation collects in gutters, do, at the bottom of the kiln and under the roof, and escapes through pipcsfg. These pipes are provided with outside traps, 71, which fill with water, and prevent the escape of heat from the kiln, while the water is permitted to run out without obstruction.
In the bottom of my kiln, I have arranged one or more wells, F, which are intended to be filled with water.
The vapors rising from this water supply the heated air in the kiln with the requisite amount of moisture, so that lumber, peat, or other materials to be dried, areprcrented from checking and cracking. If lumber or peat is exposed to dry heated air, without the requisite supply of moisture, the surface of said articles is dried first, and, by the time the drying process extends to the interior, the lumber checks and cracks, and the peat is brought in such a state that it crumbles up, and becomes unfit for practical purposes.
This diificulty is entirely avoided by the arrangement of the wells at the bottom of the kiln, and I am enabled to dry lumber and peat in one of my kilns without the least danger of checking or cracking.
