To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. GILLOOLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coalton, in the county of Randolph, State of West Virginia, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Picks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to picks, and has for its object to provide a pick so arranged that the points thereof may be removed when worn and others substituted therefor and to permit of the substitution of different forms of points.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description.

Referring now to the drawings, the present invention comprises a head 5 and handle 6, the head including a central portion 7 and removable points 8 and 9. The central portion is provided with an opening 10, with which the handle is engaged, and it is also provided with sockets 11 in its ends. Formed in the under side of the head adjacent to the ends of the central portion are recesses 12, which communicate with the sockets 11, these recesses 12 being concave at their inner ends, as shown. The points 8 and 9 form continuations of the central portion 7 and have reduced shanks 13, which are disposed in the sockets 11 and terminate short of the inner ends thereof. The shanks 13 are provided with hooks 14 at their free ends, the bills of which are directed toward the recesses 12, and disposed within the recesses 12 are latches 15, having hooks-16, which engage the hooks 1 1 of the points to prevent withdrawal of the shanks 13 from the sockets 11. To hold the latches in engagement with the hooks 16, strap-springs 17 are secured to the under face of the central portion by means of screws, upon which they are arranged for pivotal movement, and these springs bear against the latches, and these latches are provided with finger-nail slots 18 in their outer ends for engagement by the nail of the operator to move the latches against the action of the springs 17, it being understood that the outer ends of the latches are moved outwardly of the recesses 12 to disengage the hooks 14 from the hooks 16. The inner portions of the springs are disposed in depressions 17 in the under side of the central portion inwardly of the openings 12, and the screws may be operated to hold the springs in the depressions, preventing movement of the spring, or they may be operated to permit of lateral movement of the springs, as will be understood. To facilitate this movement of the latches, the inner ends of the latches are rounded and fit into the concave ends of the recesses 12. When the hooks 14 are out of engagement with the hooks 16, the points 8 and 9 may be removed from the pick, as mentioned above. By reason of the pivotal movement of the springs 17 they may be moved out of engagement with the latches to permit of removal of the latter from the sockets.
In practice any suitable materials may be used and modifications in the specilic construction shown and described may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is- As an article of manufacture, a head for picks comprising a body portion having a socket therein for the reception of a handle and including laterally-extending arms, said arms having sockets in their ends and having recesses therein communicating with the sockets, points having stems engaged in the sockets and extending into the recesses, said stems having upwardly-extending lugs at their free ends, latches removably disposed in the recesses and having notches therein in which the lugs are engaged to prevent disengagement of the points, said arms having depressions therein communicating with the recesses, springs disposed in the depressions and extending over the recesses and lying in engagement with the latches to hold the latter yieldably in engagement with the stems, and screws passed through the springs and engaged in the arms, said screws being adapted for 0p-
