NATHANIEL L. TOM'L-INSON, 'OF NEW YORK,.N. Y.

TO ALL WHO I'l MAY CONCERN:
Be itv known that I, NATHANIEL L. TOMLXNSON, of the city of'New York, in the State of New York, have invented a nevi and useful Treenail-Machine, for the turning of treenails, having in their length several diameters, so that when driven into the timber they make close shoulder-,fitting plugs; and I do hereby declare vthat the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a, part of this specification, in ivhieh- Figure 1 is-a front view,
Figure 2 is an end View,
Figure 3 a. longitudinal section, and
Figure 4: a view of the treenail, cut by this machine, inserted in the timbers. Y
In these drawings I have not shown the frame of themaehine with its bands and pulleys, as I have deemed it to be unnecessary, as all mechanics understand the construction and arrangement of such appliances.
I construct my improvement of iron, attaching the. knife, a, to a'slotted slide, Z1, worked by a screw-Wheel, c, with a'thumbscrew, d, Vfor setting the same. Opposite the knife a, which works in the box vor cup e, set or iix 4a gauge-rest, g, which is connected to the sliding screw h by means of the connecting-rodsz' z'. The slotted knife-slide is worked by the screw-wheele. Behind this screw-Wheel c I set a gauge-disk, c, operated and set by the thumb-screw Z. Playing into the sere\v-wlieel c is another serew-cog wheel, s, Working unon a reversed thread.
The stick, out of which the treenail is to be made, being inserted in the cup or box k, the knife a having been adjusted so as to give the required diameter, the gauge-rest g having, by the same movement, approached the knife, by one-quarter of a turnof the Wheel c another size or diameter is obtained, and so on to any required diameter, and thus, as it were, n. short driving treensil isvmade of a long one, the timber being first bored by angers of a size corresponding to the several diameters ofthe treenail, and when driven i'n maires a close shoulderfitting plug or fastening, as shown in fig. 4.
What cla-iin as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Pa-tent, is#
The combination of the slotted slide b, holding the adjustable knife a, the movable gauge-rest g, its connectingrods z' z', sliding screw z, the two screw-wheels c and s, with lthe gauge-disk k, constructed and arranged eubstantially as hereinbet'ore described. A.
N. L. TOMLINsoN.
