THOMAS J. KEAN, or PHILADELPHIA, PENNsYLvANiA, V.fissIeNOn or ONE- HALF TO JOHN o. SCOTT, oF BarnA MAwR, PEN.\isYr.vAi\uA.4 y, 'I
sPEcInrcArIoN forming part of vLeners resent No. 785,107, dated nare-h 21,1905.
l i Application filed cto'ber8,1903. Serial No. 176,251. v I
To .all wh/0m, it T12/ay concern.-
Be it known that LTHOMAs J. KEAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, fin `the county of Philadelphia and State "vofPennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Im roveme'nts in Driving-,Beltsof which the ollowing is aspecication. I
y This 'invention relates to drivingbelts for zo the transmission of power, its object being to (provide a construction in -which leather an metal are combined ina manner to produce a moredurable and efficient driving# belt than has been heretofore attained,
With this object in view the invention vconsists in the novel construction and combinations ofV arts, which will be hereinafter fully describe and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a fragmentary o sectional elevation o -a,drivingpulley and my improveddriving-belt. Fig. 2 is a transverse section as on the line 2 2 o f Fig. 1. Fi
3 is a sectionalelevation of the driving-be t as seen from the line 3 3 of Fig. 4. Fig. 4 is vz 5 aplan View of a portion of the driving-belt.
I Fig. -5 isa transverse section as on the lline 5 .5 of Fig. 3.
`as on-the line 6 6 of-Fig. 3.
` Referring to thedrawings, 7 designates a 3o portion of a driving-pulley, and 8 mv im# roveddriving-belt, which in its preferred form is of the following construction.
9 designates a flexible longitudinal metallic member, which in the present instancel com- 3 5 rises a chain formed of the inner block-like inks '10 and the outer flatlin'ks 11, pivotally.
connected to the links 10by meansiof the transverse pins 12, thereby affording an open space between adjacent inner links 10 and '4o each pair of opposite outer links 11.
v 13 designates a longitudinal stri of leather,
, which is preferably provided wit a channel f 14, in which is arranged,l the chain or flexible member 9, the sides of the channel extendingto the top of the res ective sides of the chain and thereby parta y inclosing the latter in the strip of leather 13. Thus it will be seen that the strip of leather 13 extends partway around the chain and forms the outer surface Fig. 6- is a transverse sectionl `of the belt, which enga ed by the grooved pulley 7.. The outer su ace of the strip of eather 13 may be of any shapein cross-secn tion to meet the various requirements. In the resent instance; the sides of the strip 13 are geveled to fit the V-shaped groove in the pulley 7. That portion of the leather strip 13 forming the bottom of the channel 14 is provided at intervals with perforations 15, which correspond in number with and are located adjacent 'to the ends of the inner links 10. Through these perforationsy 15 passes a lacing 16, which is provided to secure the leather strip 13 to the chain Q-that is to say,
the lacing passes alongv the bottom ofthe ticular construction, as the same may be modified withoutdeparting from the invention.
. I claim- 1. A driving-belt comprising a link chain, a longitudinal strip of leather arranged parallel to the chain, and a second stripl of leather engaging the iirst-named strip and the chain to secure them together.
2. A driving-belt vcomprising a link chain, a longitudinal strip of leather provided with perforations and .arranged arallel 'to the chain, and a lacing'p'assing tfirough the said perforations and engaging the chain, wherey the strip ofleather is secured to the chain.
3. A driving-belt comprising a strip of leather provided with perforations and a longitudinal channel, a link chain arranged within said channel, and a lacing passing through said ,perforations and engaging the chain, whereby the strip of leather is secured to the chain.-
4. A driving-belt comprisiiig-a'chain prochannel, and a lacing passing through said videdA with inner and outer links, a longituperforations and engaging said inner links, dinel strip of leather provided with periorawhereby the strip of leather is secured to the tions and arranged parallel' to fahe chain, and Chain. f 15 5 a lacing 'passing through said peiforaionsV In testimony whereof I a'x my signature 'and engleginlg said inner dlinks,h whlelreby the in presence of two Witnesses.` strip of eat er is secure to 15 e c ein. g f n i s 1 T 5. A driving-belt comprising e strip of lHOMAb J' 1Gb-AL l leather provided with perforatons and a lon- W'itnesses': 1o gitudinal channel, e chain provided with in- MLLDRED M. PERKINS,
ner and outer links and arranged Within seid ANDREW V. GROUPE.
