INK-PAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 784,777, dated March 14, 1905.
Application filed March 17,1904.`- Serial No. 198,630.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE C. BEssoNEr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Channing, in the county of Hartley and State of TeXas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ink-Pads, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in drafting appliances; and its object is to provide a ruler of novel construction with which is combined an inking-pad, a receptacle for a ruling instrumen t, and a blotter.
The invention consists of a ruler having one edge so shaped as to permit it to overlap the edge of a book for convenience in ruling adjacent the edges of the pages of a book. Within the ruler are arranged recesses, one of which is adapted to receive a ruling instrument, while the other contains a detachable ink-pad. Arranged upon the lower face of the ruler is a blotter, which is adapted to be held in position in a novel manner.
The invention also consists in the further novell construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the appliance. Fig. 2 is a transverse section therethrough on line rc ai, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section through that portion of the appliance containing the inking-pad, and Fig. 4 is van edge view of the ruling instrument adapted to be used in connection with the appliance.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, l is a strip of any suitable material having straight edges, one of which is stepped, as shown at 2, so as to permit it to overlap the edge of a book, so as to enable the pages of said book to be ruled close to the edges. A longitudinally-extending recess 3 is formed in the upper face of the ruler, and loosely arranged therein is an ink-pad 4 of any suitable construction. This pad is adapted to be retained in place by arectangular frame 5, which is hinged to one end of the ruler and is adapted to overlap the edges of the ink-pad. A rotary catch 6 is mounted within the ruler and is adapted to overlap one end of the frame 5, so as to hold it in retaining position. The recess 3 is located adjacent one end of the ruler, and adjacent the other end thereof is a recess 7, having enlarged ends 8, and this recess is adapted to receive a ruling instrument of novel construction. This instrument eomprises a strip 9, having reduced ends 10, and in each of these ends is mounted a revoluble disk 11. One of the disks, 1l, has a sharpened periphery, while the periphery of the other disk, l2, has a groove therein. Blocks 13 of cork are inserted at suitable points in the lower face of the ruler and are adapted to receive pins la, which extend through a strip 15 of blotting'- paper and hold it in position upon the lower face of the ruler. If desired, graduations may be arranged along one or both edges of the ruler. y
By providing an appliance such as herein described a ruler, blotter, ink-pad, and ruling instrument are combined in compact form. When it is desired to rule a sheet of paper or other material with a single line, the disk 11 is rolled over the pad 4, so as to cause the ink to adhere to the periphery thereof, and said disk is then rolled over the sheet with one edge of the ruler to guide it.- Should it be desirable to rule parallel lines, the disk 12 is rolled over the pad L and then upon the paper toloe ruled.
It will be seen that the device is very simple and inexpensive in form and is of great convenience to bookkeepers and others who are in the habit of frequently ruling the pages ol'I books.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but ldo not limit myself thereto, as l am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrilicing any of the advantages therein, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of myinvention.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is A drafting appliance of the character described comprising a ruler having a stepped IOO second recess within said face, an ink-pad In testimony Whereo'fl ax mysgnaturein wlthln szud second recess, a retmnlngfrznne presence of two witnesses.
