PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY BAYER, OF SCI-IENECTADY, NEIV YORK, ASSIGNOR TO GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF NEIV YORK.
LAMP-SOCKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 784,775, dated March 14, 1905.
Application filed June 21, 1901. Serial No. 65,394.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY BAYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Schenectady, in the county of. Schenectady, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Sockets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to incandescent electric lamps; and its object is to simplify the To construction of what are known as keyless sockets and enable them to be quickly made at small cost.
My improved socket has but eight parts and dispenses with several screws heretofore used.
I 5 In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a socket made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an axial section of the same. Fig. 3 is a top plan view. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view. Figs. 5 and 6 are perspective views of the line-terminal plates.
The base A is of porcelain or other insulation and is substantially cylindrical, with a flange a and a reduced portion or neck a, pro- 2 5 vided with external screw-threads which enter and engage with one end of the screwthreaded sheet-metal lamp-receptacle B. An insulating-washer C is interposed between the end of the receptacle and the flange a. In the 3 top of the base A is a central pit (f, with which communicate two radial grooves a formed in said top and intersecting at their outer ends two grooves a", running lengthwise of the flange a, which form passage-ways for the lead-wires. At opposite points on the sides of the base are shallow flattened recesses a to receive the nuts by which the socket is retained in the usual shell. (Not shown.)
In one side of the base is a narrow deep ra- 4 dial slot at, extending from the outside in nearly to the center and from the lower end up to a point about midway of the flange (t. In this slot is received the strip I), which forms one line-terminal plate and also the center contact. The strip is bent, preferably,
into a W shape, as shown, with widened heads (Z (Z, one of which, (Z, lies under the center of the neck a, and the other one, fl, rests against the side of the flange (L in the flattened recess.
A screw E passes centrally through the base 5 A, its head being flush with the bottom of the pit a and its screw-threaded end entering a tapped hole in the head (Z of the contact D, and thus securing said contact in place. A binding-screw F enters a tapped hole in the head (Z of the strip D for connecting one of the line-terminals. The other line-terminal is connected with the plate G by means of a binding-screw in the upper end thereof. The plate is preferably bent, as shown in Fig. 6, to fit into a shallow longitudinal recess (1.
in the base A, the lower end of the plate passing down inside the receptacle B, to which it is electrically connected bysolder H, run into the recess (0 and into the space between the 5 plate and the receptacle. This also locks the receptacle in place and prevents it from rotating on the neck a when a lamp is screwed into it.
I do not desire to restrict myself to the par- 7 ticular form or construction of parts herein shown and described, since it is apparent that they may be changed and modified without departing from my invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-- 1. A lamp-socket comprising a porcelain base having a neck provided with a recess, a lamp-receptacle screwed on the outside of said neck and covering said recess, and a line-terminal plate having oneend lying in said recess and attached to said receptacle by means of solder poured in to said recess about said plate, and the other end carrying a binding-screw.
2. A lamp-socket comprising a base having 5 a deep narrow radial slot, and a W-shaped metal strip in said slot, one end of said strip resting against the end of the base, and the other end against the side of said base and carrying a binding-screw. 9
3. A lamp-socket comprising a base having a flange and a neck, and containing a deep ra- In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of June, 1901.
HENRY BAYER.
