Be it known that l, HIRAM Q. H001), a citizen of the United States, residing at Webb City, in the county of Jasper and State of Mi ssouri,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spike-Pullers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in spike-pullers adapted for use in pulling spikes from railway-ties; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.

This invention is an improvement on the spike-puller described and claimed in my copending application for Letters Patent of the United States filed April 7, 1904, Serial No. 202,075, allowed June 30, 1904., the object of my present invention being to effect improve- {nents in the construction of the operatingever.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved spike-puller, showing the same in operative position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, showing the rail on which the puller is mounted in section; and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the inner portion of the lever and the heelplates thereof, the latter being shown detached from the lever.

The lever of my improved spike-puller comprises a bar 1 and a pair of heel-plates 2, which are detachably secured to the lower end thereof on opposite sides of said bar. Each of said 'heel-plates comprises a web portion 3 and a curved arm 4 at the rear and lower side thereof, the front ends of the said curved arms projecting beyond the front sides of the said webs or plates, as at 5, and being provided with alined transverse openings 6. The said curved arms of the heel-plates are adapted to bear on the tread of the rail and to form the fulcrum for the lever, and the said heel-plates are provided on their opposing inner sides with parallel flanges 7, which form recesses between them to receive opposite sides of the lower portion of the bar. The said heel-plates and the bar are provided with alined transverse openings, through which extends a bolt 8, which serves to clamp the heel-plates to the lever-bar and detachably secure the heel-plates thereto, so that they may be readily removed therefrom for repairs or to be replaced in the event that either or both of the said heelplates become broken or damaged.

It will be observed by reference to the drawings that the web, flanges, and curved arms of each heel-plate are formed integrally, that the arrangement of the curved arms on the outer, rear, and lower sides of the webs is such as to greatly strengthen the heel-plates, and that the arrangement of the parallel flanges on the innersides of the webs is also such as to greatly strengthen the construction of the heel-plates.

A swivel member 9 is disposed pivotal] y between the projectingends or lugs 5 of the heel plates and is provided with trunnions 11 at its ends, which have their bearings in the openings 6, with which said ends or lugs are provided. A bit 12, which has an opening 13 to clear the head and jaws 14 to engage the opposite sides of the head of a spike, is provided with a screw-threaded stem 15, which passes through an unthreaded transverse opening with which the swivel member is provided. On the said screw-threaded stem and engaging the same is a nut 16, which serves to adjust the bit with reference to the swivel member according to the work to be performed by the puller.

Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a spikepuller,a lever comprising a bar, heel plates detachably secured to opposite sides thereof, each comprising an integral web and a curved arm, said plates having flanges on their opposing sides bearing on opposite sides of the lever-bar, and said curved arms having projecting portions forming lugs, in combination with a swivel member having its bearings in said lugs, and a bit connected to said swivel member.
