MMT--- UNITED STATES PATENT GEETCE.
IVASHINGTON L. HARRIS, OF SVVISSVALE, PENNSYLVANIA.
SPIKE-FULLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 714,107, dated November 18, 1902.
Application filed February 11, 1902. Serial No. 93,548. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that LWASHINGTON L. HARRIS, a cit-izen of the United States, residing at Swissvale, in the county of Allegheny andl State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement'. in Spike-Fullers, of which improvement the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in spike-pullers and bolt-pullers, and has for its object the provision of novel means whereby a spike may be easily extracted from a railway-tie or other object in which it is secured.
The present invention has for its object to provide a spike-puller that will be extremely simple in construction, strong, durable, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and highly efficient in its use; furthermore, to provide novel means whereby interchangeable jaws may be secured in the device when desired, or in case one of the jaws should become broken or worn a new one may be replaced therein.
With the above and other objects in View the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved spike-puller. Fig. 2 is a front View of the same, showing one of the jaws in vertical section. Fig. 3 is a side elevation partly in vertical section. Fig. 4 is a perspective front view of one of the jaws. Fig. 5 is a similar side view of one of the jaws.
In the drawings the reference-numeral l indicates the handle of the spike-puller, carrying the body portion 2, which body portion has formed integral therewith two forward extensions 3 3. In said extensions 3 3 are formed dovetailed grooves 4 to receive the movable jaws 5, which are wedge-shaped and carry on their engaging faces teeth 6 6, these teeth tapering as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings. Through the sides of the extensions 3 are formed slots 7 to receive the setscrews 8, passing therethrough and engaging the movable jaws.
The reference-numeral 9 represents flat springs, the rearward ends of which are secured at lO to the upper face of the body p0rtion 2, the forward end of the spring 9 engaging the upper faces of the jaws 5, but are not attached thereto. The slot 7 limits the movement of the jaws, as will be readily apparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
The operation of my improved spike and bolt puller is as follows: As the spike is placed between the jaws of the puller, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the jaws will ride upwardly, the springs 9 being thereby brought under tension, and as the pressure is released the springs will tend to force the jaws downwardly, thereby closing the same and producing a clamping action upon the spike, which may be then easily removed in the ordinary and well-known manner.
The many advantages obtained by the use of my improved spike -puller in points of strength, durability, and efficiency will be readily seen, and it will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a spike and bolt puller, the combination of a handle, a body portion having extending portions, the latter having formed therein dovetailed grooves, movable jaws carrying teeth secured therein, set-screws extending through slots formed in the forward-extending portions engaging said jaws, and springs secured at one end and the free end of said springs extending over the upper faces of said jaws, all parts being arranged and operating substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a spike and bolt puller, the eombinal In testimony whereof I have hereunto tion of a handle carrying forward extensions signed my name in the presence of two subhaving dovetailed grooves formed therein, seribing witnesses. movable Wedge-shaped jaws elidably secured WASHINGTON L. HARRIS.
5 in said grooves, springs engaging the upper In presence offaee of said jaws whereby a clamping action JOHN GROETZINGER,
is obtained, substantially as described. l M. HUNTER.
