SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 784,665, dated March 14, 1905.

Be it known that I, ETHAN I. DODDS, oi' Avalon, Allegheny county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and usefulOar-Frame, ot' which the following' is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being' had to the accompanying drawings, forming partei' this specitication, in which- Figure lis a vertical section through the center sill of a car,l showing a body-bolster in elevation and showing the iianged tension member which is applied to the bolster and extends through the center sill. Fig. 2 is a top plan view ot' Fig. l, partly in section, on the line II II. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the center sill, showing the body-bolster in section. The figures on Sheet 2 show a modiication of the invention. ig. i is a vertical cross-section through the center sill, showing the tension member also in vertical section. Fig. 5 is a View of Fig'. 4, partly in plan and partly in horizontal section. Fig. 6 is a vertical section on the line VI VI of Fig. 5. In the figures on Sheet l of the drawings I show the center sill of a car constituted of parallel channel-beams 2 2. The body-bolster, which extends at right angles to the center sill, is composed of members 3 3, which abut at the inner ends against the center sill and are connected thereto by suitable connectingangles 4:. The members 3 3 are preferably constituted of sections of I-beams divided with a bias cut longitudinally through the web, so as to malte each member ot' tapering form, having the original flanges I L of the I- beam along its bottom edge and having the upper or cut edge unflanged. The bolster members 3 3 are connected by a tension mem ber 5 5, constituted by angle-bars which are riveted to the upper edge or' the bolster members and extend along the same from end to end of the bolster through holes c cut for that purpose in the centersill. The tension member connects the parts of the bolster iirmly together, and when so constructed lateral and longitudinal thrusts are well resisted. The members oi' the bolster are also preferably connected by a bottom tie-plate 6, which extends across the center sill.
In the figures on the second sheet of the drawings the continuous tension member does not extend through but over the center sill. Thus in Figs. 4l, 5, and 6 the bolster members extend to the plane of the top of the center sill, whereas in Fig. 1 the center sill extends to a higher level. The bolster has on each side ot' the center sill two bolster members 3, each constituted as above with reference to Fig. l, set at an angle to each other and connected by parts 7 7l at the outer ends and bottom, so as to produce abolstcr tapering from the middle to the ends. The connecting tension member is a plate 5, which is fitted upon the top of the bolster members and center sill, is unflanged where it crosses the members of the center sill, but along the bolstermembers has marginal fiangesrZ d, which are riveted to said members.
In Fig. 7 I show a tension member 5" ot' a form which may be used when the members of the bolster are parallel, as in Fig. S. This tension member is preferably made of a channel-beam from which the flanges are removed at the center. In Fig. 8 I show the bolster members made of I-beams, and in Figs. 4, 5, and 6 they are made oi' channels.
In Figs. 9, IO, 11, and 12 I show a modified construction wherein the bolster is constituted by a single bolster member 3 on each side of the center sill, made as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 and fixed to the sill at the inner end by angle connections al, The sill is made o't' parallel channel members with inwardly-directed flanges. The tension member consists ot' two pieces 5u 5, each adapted to extend along the bolster members and across the center sill,
each having a vertical ange e e riveted to the upper edg'e of the bolster member and cut away where it crosses the sill and having a flat top portion tapering' from the middle toward the ends. These tension-member pieces are preferably made by dividing a channelbeam longitudinally through the web with angled cuts.
l/Vithin the scope of' my invention as stated in the claims the part-s of' the device may be modified in various ways, since What I claim isw 1. In combination with a center sill, bolster members on opposite sides of the sill and a flanged tension member uniting the bolster members across the center sill, said bolster members having' integral flanges along their lower edges; substantially as described.
2. In combination with a center sill, bolster members on opposite sides of' the sill and a tension member extending' along' the bolster members across the center sill, said bolster members having integral flanges along their lower edges, and the tension member being' iianged and applied to the upper unllanged edge of' the bolster members; substantially as described.
3. In combination with a center sill, bolster members on opposite sides of' the sill and a flanged tension member extending along' the -unflanged edges of' the bolster members and across the center sill, said bolster members being' constituted in sections of flanged beams divided longitudinally through the web with bias cuts; substantially as described.
4. In combination with a center sill, bolster members having unflang'ed upper edges and abutting against opposite sides of the sill, and a flanged tension member extending' along' said bolster members and across the sill, said tension-member flanges being omitted above the sill; substantially as described.
5. In combination with a center sill, a plurality of' bolster members on opposite sides ofl the sill, and aiianged tension mem ber uniting the bolster members, said tension member' being' unflang'ed where it crosses the center sill; substantially as described.
