ClSTERN-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 784,531, dated March 14, 1905.
Application filed July 27,1904. Serial No. 218,328.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES W. AXT and FERDINAND H. BORCHERDING, citizens of the United States. residing at Fort l/Vayne, in the 5 county of Allen, in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oistern-Oovers; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot' the invention, which will lo enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being' had to the accompanying drawings` which form part of this specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in covers for cisterns, wells, and catch-basins.
The primary object of our present invention is to provide a cover for cisterns and wells having an interlocking two-part cap detachably mounted on the annular or stationary portion of the cover and having a novel means for rigidly securing the base ot' the pump-stock in position thereon.
Another object of our invention is to provide a cistern-cover having an interlocking cap which by a slight modification is adapted for use as a 'cover for catch-basins.
Our invention consists of an annular outer portion or rim having a central circular opening ot' proper size and a two-part cap detachably mounted on the said annular portion, closing the said central portion, and having' an interlocked engagement with the said annular portion and provided with a circular recess adapted to holdingly engage the usual 3 5 bell-shaped base of the pump-stock in use.
The principal novel features of our invention reside in the means for interlocking the parts of the cap together and to the stationary portion ol the cover, and for securing the 40 pump-stock to the cap.
In the drawings similar reference-numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which4 Figure 1 is a vertical central section of our invention, taken on the line m a' ot' Fig. 4. Fig. 2 is a Vertical central section of the same, taken on the line y 1/ of Fig. 4, showing the relative arrangement of the pump-stock base and suction-pi pe when in position therein.
Fig. 3 is a side view of our invention, show- 50 ing the parts in their interlocked relation. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the same with one of the detachable cap-sections moved out of position to show the means by which the interlocked union is effected and also showing in dotted outline the relative arrangement ot' the cap-sections when in their interlocked engagement. l
The annular portion or rim 1 ot' the cover has a width corresponding with the thickness of the wall of the well or cistern upon which it is mounted and is provided with two or more pendent anchorage-lugs 2 of any proper form, preferably in opposite arrangement and secured to the supporting-wall in any suitable manner. This annular portion l of the cover has a vertical slot 3 upon its inner edge, Fig.
4, and in approximately opposite arrangement it has upon the lower face of its inner edge an undercut recess 4. Fig. 2, Jfor the purpose about to be described.
Thecap consists of two separable approximately-equal semicircular sections 5 and 6, having cooperative semicircular openings 7 and 8, respectively, upon their meeting edges to form a central opening Jfor the suction-pipe 19. These cap- sections 5 and 6 are provided upon their upper face with the coincident inclined semicircular flanges 9 and 10, respectively, adapted when the parts are united to form a bell-shaped recess 11, adapted to holdingly secure the Haring base of the pumpstock 12, Fig. 9.. '.lhe cap-section 6 has upon its diametric edge the opposite duplicate flanges 13, Figs. 2. and 4, adapted to overlap and holdingly engage the corresponding portions of the adjacent edge of the cooperating section 5, as shown in dotted outline in Fig. 4. The cap-section 6 also has upon its lower face at its inner edge and at or near its perimeter the pendent lugs 14 and 15, the former being adapted for an interlocking engagement with the adjacent edgeot' the annular portion 1 in the recess 4, Figs. 1 and 2, and the latter being adapted to engage the lower tace of the portion 1 at one end of the said slot 3 when in position in an undercut recess 20. The capsection 5 has upon its lower face at or near its perimeter a pendent lug 16, Fig. 1, adapted to snugly lit in and fill the remainder of the slot 3 when the lug 14 is in position therein. These cap- sections 5 and 6 are provided upon their upper face in opposite arrangement at or near their inner and interlocking edges with the laterally-apertured ears or lugs 17, adapted to be rigidly united by a proper bolt 18 in a well-understood manner. These ears 17 are preferably arranged on that portion of the cap-sections which are adjacent to the said slot 4.
rlhe manner of employing our invention thus described is obvious and, brieliy stated, is as follows: When the annular portion 1 of the cover has been properly anchored by c'ement or otherwise upon a well or cistern wall, the two-part cap and pump-stock are united in their holding engagement by first placing the cap-section 6 in its interlocked engagement with the supporting annular portion 1. This is readily and conveniently done by inserting the lug 14 into its holding position, and then doing likewise with the lug 15, which engages the cover portion 1 at the adjacent end of the slot 3, as described. rl`he operator now places the pump-stock 12 in position on the cap-section 6 in such a manner that the flaring or bell-shaped base of the pump-stock is arranged beneath the liange 13, and the suction-pipe 19, which is usually fixed or integral with the pump-stock, is inthe opening 8. He next places the other cap-section 5 in position by placing the lugl 16 thereon in its position in the slot 3, brings the inner edge of the section 5 into position beneath the flanges 13, and then secures these cap-sections rigidly together by means of the bolt 18. These capsections are thus not only locked together, but are rigidly interlocked with the annular plate 1, while at the same time the pumpstock 12 is rigidly secured in position by means of the flanges 10.
When it is desired to employ our invention as a catch-basin cover or like purposes, the flange 10 may be omitted, the central opening may be reduced in size, and additional perorations provided, if desirable.
Wlhat we desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A cistern-cover consisting of an annular metallic rim having a vertical slot and an undercut recess upon its inner edge in diametric relation; a two-part cap for the central opening of the rim, consisting of two separable sections or semicircular plates having coincident semicircular openings at their porting-rim having its inner edge provided with a vertical slot and an undercut recess in opposite relation; a two-part cover consisting of substantially duplicate semicircular plates having semicircular openings at their inner edge, semicircular inclined flanges upon their 4upper Jface for the purpose specified; means for securing the said plates to the said rim; and means for interlocking the said plates together.
3. In a cistern or well cover an annular supporting-rim having its inner edge slotted and undercut as shown; a cap for the central opening of said rim consisting of two semicircular plates having coincident semicircular openings at their diametric edge, having coincident semicircular inclined ilanges upon their upper face for the purpose specified, one of said plates having' on its inner edge flanges overlapping its companion plate and having upon its lower face pendent lugs adapted for an interlocking engagement with the said rim in the said slot and recess respectively, the other plate having' upon its lower face a pendent lug adapted to engage the said slot; and means for securing the said plates against lateral displacement when in position.
Signed by us at Fort Wayne, Allen county, State of Indiana, this 23d day of July, A. D. 1904.
CHARLES W. AX'l. FERDINAND H. BORCHERDING.
