TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, THOMAS GRIST, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Reflecting Gas-Burners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates toan improvement in the gas-burners with which are combined spherical or oval reflectors; and my improvement consists, among other features, in-arranging a burner on the top of the reflector,
sothat the upper portion of. a room may be illuminated, as described hereafter,
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make my invention, I will now proceed to describe the con- On reference to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification Figure 1 is an exterior view of my improved reflecting gas-burner,
Figure 2 a vertical section, and
Figures 3 and 4 sections of parts of my improvement, drawn to an enlarged scale.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A is a short tube, having internal screw-threads, adapted to similar threads on the or chandelier, and on to the tube A is screwed the hollow distributor B, from tubes, D, each terminating in a burner, a, a packing-ring, b, intervening A vertical pipe, E, is secured to and communicates with the interio thispipe is secured the burner a.
tube of a gas-bracket which project two or more small between the tube A and distributor B. r of the distributor, and to the top of F is a reflector, consisting, in the present instance, of a. hollowsphere of glass, silv being a hole at the top, and another at the bottom of the reflector, so that it may be placed over the vertical pipe E, and rest on a washer, 71, which is loosely fitted to the top of the distributor 13. Another washer, 2', is
placed over the pipe E, rests on the top of the reflector, and is confined thereto by the upper burner, e, which serves as a nut.
ered on the inside, there Reflectors of a spherical or oval form, combined with two or more gas-burucr country, and have been imported frdm abroad for several years past, but the burn situated :13 to reflect the light downwards, leaving the upper portion of the room obviated by the use of the upper burner, e, the light from which is so reflected as s, have been in use in this ers have invariably been so comparatively dark, a defect to illuminate the upper por- It will be observed that the two washers, 7t and z', are perforated, and 'that the holes in the reflector, for the admission of the pipe E, are larger than the latter, so that the air can pass through the perforations of the lower washer, through the reflector, and through the perforations of the upper washer, thereby maintaining the reflector comparatively cool, and preventing it from being fractured by the heat from the burners.
I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- V 1. The arrangement of the burner e on the top of the reflector F, as and for the 2. The combinationof the distributor B, pipe E, passing through the reflector, 3. The perforated washers 7t and 2', in combination with the pipe E, the reflect the latter.
In testimony whereof, I l
purpose set forth. and the burner c. or F, and the openings in rave signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
