Be it known that l, CARL Eroli EM EYER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Yonkers, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and use- `ful Improvements in Gas-Ranges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in gas-ranges, which are designed with a view ot' combining in one single structure an eiective broiler, an oven at one or both sides of said broiler, a water-heater, and the ordinary cooking-burners, said range having the advantage of being' also adapted to be used for heating purposes during the winter season; and for this purpose the invention consists in the combination in a range ot' a casing, spaced horizontally-alined ovens supported therein, and a broiling-chamber arranged between said ovens and ot' greater height than the same.
The invention consists, further, in the combination in a range of a broiling-chamber having a top opening', a cover-plate for the latter, and an auxiliary plate for cooperating with said cover-plate in positioning a broiler in said broiling-chamber.
The invention also consists in other novel features and combinations ot' parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.

At the inside oi the casing t are arranged two ovens o and which are made of sheet metal and so arranged that their top, side, and bottom walls are equidistant from the respective top, side, and bottom walls of the casing. NV hen two ovens are used, they are both preferably made of one continuous piece of sheet metal, as shown in Fig. 2-that is to say, they are made by bending up at each end the piece of sheet metal' from which they are to be made so as to form two rectangular bodies which abut at their ends against the front and rear walls of the casing af. The ovens 0 and o are arranged at such a distance from each other that a broiling-chamber c of sufficient width is arranged between them for receiving the broiler and the heating appliance for the same. The broilingchamber c is provided with a hinged front wall c' and a covering-plate L, (shown in Fig. 6,) which is supported on flanges z of the top plate d. The covering-plate t is provided with parallel inwardly-extending slots if, into which the handles 2f of the broiler t' are placed when the latter is placed in position in the broiling-chamber. The covering-plate 7L is further provided with a registering pin f, by which connection with a second auxiliary plate le* of approximately square shape is made, which auxiliary plate it* is provided with a registering hole It, adapted to be engaged by the pin 713. The auxiliary plate la* is also provided with slots It?, arranged in a direction at rightangles to the slots of the covering-plate L, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 6, so that by the intersection of the two parallel slot systems the handles of the broiler are hel'd firmly in position. The covering-plate, as well as the auxiliary plate, is provided with small lugs 7L and ibm, which abut alongside of each other and hold the cover-plates in position.
At the sides of the broiling-chamber are arranged horizontal gas-supply pipes m, provided with openings m' for the heating gasjets. The pipes m are connected at their rear ends with an upright manifold m2 in cornmunieation with the gas-supply and provided `with a stop-cock m3 for turning on the gas,
the spindle m5 of the same passing through the top plate and'being provided at-its upper end with a handle m4. An air-opening in the supply-pipe of sufcient size produces the mixing of the air with the gas supplied, so that jets of blue flame are issued from the holes of the gas-supply pipes m for heating the meat, toast, or other article to be broiled. In the bottom of the broiling-chamber is ar'- ranged a gravy-collecting pan p, which is shown clearly in Fig. 5 and which is provided with a central lug p', thatV registers with a socket-opening p2 in the rear wall of the casing. Side lugs p2 are also provided, which register with corresponding openings in the side walls of the ovens, so as to place the collecting-pan p into p roperly-centralized position in the broiling-chamber. The front of the collecting-pan is provided with a curved tubular outlet p3, that conducts the gravy collected in the pan pinto a cup e', which is supported on a bracket as, located on and cast integral with the front wall of the casing a. The gravy-collecting pan p is provided at opposite sides at the interior of the pan with inclined lugs p4, by which the lower end of the broiler resting thereon is placed in ccntral position between the heating-jets, so that a uniform broiling 'heat is exerted from .both 8o sides on the articles placed in the broiler. A\ recess is arranged in the front door c of the broiling-chamber, which serves in connection with the inclined lugs p4 of the collecting-pan Y p for positively holding the pan in central position in the bottom of the broiling-chamber, so that it is enabled by its inclined side lugs to support the lower part of the broiler centrally in the broiling-chamber between the gas-jets, while the handle of Athe broiler is supported by the main and auxiliary coverplates centrally on the top plate of the broiling-chamber. s
The ring-shaped burners a, that are located below the openings of the top plate al, are constructed in the same manner as in the gasovens heretofore in use and supplied with gas by suitable branch supply-pipes nx a2 n3, extending from the upper part of the casing to the front part thereof and then back to the main supply-pipe, said branch supply-pipes being provided with the usual stop-cocks N14/ni. The openings for the cooking vessels are closed when not in use by means of lids aw in the same manner as in the ordinary cooking stoves or ranges."
Above the gas-supply pipes in the broilingchamber is arranged a U-shaped water-pipe l, which is connected at one front end with a suitable water-supply Z and at its other front end with an outlet water-pipe 2. The inlet and outlet water-pipes may beprovided with suitable stop-cocks, (not shown,) so as to regulate the supply of water. The pipe Z is located close to the gas-supply pipes m in the broiling-chamber, so as to be heated by the heat of the sanne. If desired, the upper gassupply pipes of the broiling-chamber may be separately supplied from the lower ones, so that the water can be heated independently of the broiling operation by simply lighting the jets of the upper gas-supply pipes and shut. ting off the lower ones, two separate stopcocks being in such case provided.

The ad antages of my improved gas-range are as follows: The broiler instead of being arranged horizontally or vertically, as heretofore. is arranged centrally between or alongside of the ovens, whereby a very effective heating' action on both sides of the article to be broiled is obtained, making it possible to complete the broiling in about one-half the time than hitherto. The heat of the products of combustion led around the ovens is used for heating the same, whereby a uniform baking Vheat is produced thereon and at the same time an effective room-heater is provided.
A further advantage is that the gravy produced by the broiling falls into the gravypan instead of onthe burners, as hitherto, causing thereby an unequal heating-surface of the same and a clogging of the burner-holes.
By the combined construction of the gasrange from cast metal and sheet metal a compact construction offering advantageous features in manufacturing is produced which enables the manufacturer to furnish the gasrange at a rate to compete with the ordinary gas-ranges of similar sizes now in use, while having greater advantages than the same.

4. In combination, in a range, a casing, spaced ovens supported therein, the top of each oven beingspaced from the top of said casing, and abroiling-chamber arranged between said ovens and having the top thereof constituted by the top of said casing.
5. In combination, a casing, spaced ovens supported therein, and a broiling-chamber arranged between said ovens and having the top thereof constituted by the top of the easing, the latter being provided with a top opening for said broiling-chamber.
6. In a range, in combination, a casing provided with a top opening, a broiling-chamber in said casing below said opening, and a free cover-plate for the latter provided with means for positioninga broiler in said broiling-chamber.
7. In a range, in combination, a casing provided with atop opening, a broiling-chamber in said casing beneath said opening', and a free cover-plate for the latter adapted to maintain. a broiler in upright position in said broilingchamber.
8. In combination, in a range, a broilingchamber having' a top opening` a cover-plate for the latter, and an auxiliary plate for eooperating with said cover-plate in positioning a broiler in said broiling-chamber.
9. ln combination, a broiling-chamber having an opening', a cover-plate for the latter, and an exterior auxiliary plate for coperating with said cover-plate in positioning' a broiler in said broiling-chamber.
10. In combination, abroiling-chamber having an opening, a cover-plate for the latter provided with slots for engaging' a broiler to position the same in said chamber, and means arranged exterior-ly of said casing for retaining the broiler against movement in said slots.
11. In combination, in a gas-range, a broilingichamber, a top plate for covering the same and for engaging a broiler so as to prevent the displacement of the same in one direction, and an auxiliary plate in connection with said top plate for preventing the displacement of the broiler in a direction at right angles to the first-named direction.
19.. In combination, in a range, a broilingchamber having a top opening, a cover-plate for the latter provided with slots for engagement with a broiler, and an auxiliary plate for maintaining the broiler against movement in said slots.
13. In combination, a broiling-chamber having an opening', a cover-plate for the latter provided with slots for engagement with a broiler, and an auxiliary plate likewise provided with slots for cooperating with said h rstnamed slots in positioning a broiler in said chamber.

15. In combination, a broiling-chamber, a broiler, a gravy-pan supporting the latter and centering the bottom of the same in the broiling-chamber, and a top plate positioning the handles of the broiler centrally of the broiling-chamber.

In a gas-range, the combination, with a casing, of spaced horizontally-alined ovens supportedtherein, each oven being spaced from the walls of said casing, heating means between the top of each oven and the top of the casing, a broiling-chamber between said ovens and having the top thereof constituted by the ytop of the casing, means for heating said broiling-chamber, and a damper arranged in the space between the top of each oven and the top of the casing.
17. In a gas-range, the combination, with a casing, of spaced horizontally-alined ovens supported therein and each spaced from the walls lof the casing, heating means between the top of each oven and the top of the casing, a broiling-chamber arranged between said ovens, means for heating said broilingchamber, and an uptake communicating with said casing below said ovens and said broilingchamber.
18. In a gas-range, the combination of a casing, ovens supported at the interior of said casing transversely to the front and rear walls of the same, a broiling-chamber between said ovens, gas-supply pipes adjacent the side walls of the broiling chamber, flues extending around the ovens, and dampers located in said flues at their connection with the broilingchamber.
19. In a gas-range, the combination, with a casing, of spaced horiZontally-alined ovens supported therein, each oven being spaced from the walls of said, casing, heating means between the top of each oven and the top'I of the'casing, a broiling-chamber between said oyens and having the top thereofl constituted by the top of the casing, means for heating said broiling-chamber, dampers in the space between the top of said ovens and the top of the casing, and an uptake communicating with said casing below said ovens and said broiling-chamber.
20. In a gas-range, the combination, with a broiling-chamber provided with gas-supply pipes at opposite sides thereof, of a gravycollecting pan at the bottom of the same, means for supporting said gravy-collecting broiler, and an auxiliary plate provided with slots extending at right angles to the slots of said top plate for holding the wire handles of the broiler firmly in central position in the broiling-chamber.
21. In a range,the combination, with a broiling-chamber, of a gravy-pan supported at the bottom thereof, said pan being provided with an outlet-tube for centering the same in the broiling-chamber, and Aat opposite sides thereof with retaining-lugs, and a cover for the broiling-chamber provided with slots,the lugs of said gravy-pan and the slots ofV said cover being adapted to cooperate in positioning a broiler in said broiling-chamber.
22. In a gas-range, the combination, with an exterior casing provided with a plurality of front doors and openings in its top for the cooking vessels, and gas-burners below said top openings, of ovens in said casing, a broiling-chamber between said ovens, gas-supply pipes at both side walls of the broiling-chamber, iiues extending from thebroiling-chamber around the ovens` an outlet-opening in the casing below the broiling-chamber, an outletopening in the casing above the gas-supply pipe of the broiling-chamber, dampers at the point of connection of the upper part of the broiling-chamber with said iiues, and a pipe connecting with the outlets in the broilingchamber for conducting o the products of combustion.
23. A gas-range, comprising a casing,ovens supported transversely to the casing, having their top, bottom and side walls arranged substantially equidistantly from the respective top, bottom and side walls of the casing, said ovens being made of one continuous piece of metal, heating means in the casing between the top of the oven and top of the casing, lidopenings in the top of the casing above said heating means, a broiling-chamber arranged between the ovens, the adjacent walls of the latter forming the side walls of the broilingchamber, heatingmeans in the broiling-charnber, and an uptake-pipe connecting with the upper and lower part of the casing.
