IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR MEASURING CLOTH.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 78,399, dated May 26, 1868.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CALEB L. SHoTwELL, of Allamuchy, county of Warren, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Device or Apparatus for Measuring Textile Goods in the Roll or Piece; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference made thereon.

The device or apparatus consists of a measured drum, a, Figures 1 and 2, (which is revolved by the friction of a cord, 0' 0, Figs. 1 and 2, as it passes from the reel It, Fig. 1, through the round hollow tube T, Fig. 1,) connected by cog-wheel gearing to the wheel I), Fig. 2, a hand attached to which indicates on the dial (7, Fig. 1, at each part of a revolution, a like part of a yard of the cord 0 c, which has passed over'or around the drum a, which drum imparts its motion to the wheel 0, Fig. 2, with hand attached, indicating on dial D, Fig. 1, the number of revolutions of the wheel I), or the number-of yards of a cord, 0 c, which has passed over or around the drum a, said drum at having light flanges, sufficient to prevent the cord from running off, also an adjusting-block, e, to facilitate its construction and regulate its dimensions, said block being held between the flanges by the screw 8 and springs 00 0c. The reel R is also constructed with flanges or sides of sufficient dimensions to contain the cord, and has a tension-spring pressing against it, to prevent unnecessary motion and insure the friction necessary to prevent the slipping of the cord over the drum (0.

Said contrivance is to be used by inserting the tube T between the folds of the goods to be measured, either at the center or at the outer end, the end of the cord being held or hooked fast at said place; thence running the tube between the folds, and following around between the same until you reach the other end the number of yards will be indicated by the hand on the large dial D, and the fractions on the small dial (1.

I claim 1. The combination, with an apparatus, constructed substantially as described, for measuring cloth in the roll or piece, of a dial or indicator, substantially as described.

2. The combination, with a cloth-measuring device, of a reel, cord, and dial, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.

3. The measuring apparatus, constructed as described, and shown by the drawings.
