EUGENE MORENUS, (5F CLEVELAND, NEW YORK.
MOLD FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF BUILDING-BLOCKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 783,451, dated February 28, 1905.
Application filed August 2'7, 1904. Serial No. 222,403.
To all whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EUGENE MORENUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, county of Oswego, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molds for the Manufacture of Building-Blocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to molds for the manufacture of building-blocks, and particularly to that type illustrated, described, and claimed in a copending application filed by me simultaneously herewith and numbered serially 222,404. I
The object is to provide a novel and simple structure whereby blocks of plastic material and having the characteristics described in the above-mentioned application may be readily and expeditiously manufactured. w.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a mold constructed in accordancewith the present invention. Fig. 2is a transverse view thereth rough. Fig. 3 is a sectional view onthe line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the side walls and the core section or member carried thereby. Fig. 6 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through a slightly-modified form of construction-namely, one employed in manufacturing a corner-block. Fig. 7 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 7 7 of Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of one of the side walls and the core section or member carried thereby of this modification, and Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the fillingblock employed in connection with the last illustrated form of the invention.
Similar reference-numerals designate similar parts throughout the several views.
In the first illustrated form of construction a sectional body is provided consisting of the side walls 1, having in wardly-projecting coresections 2, which taper toward their inner ends, said inner ends abutting when the mold is assembled. As the core-sections 2 are considerably narrower than the side walls 1, pockets 3 are thus formed for the reception of faces of the side walls 1.
the material that is thus molded into the spaced sections .or members of the block. These members or sections are connected by tie-rods 4, and the core members constitute means for supporting the said rods while the block-sections are being formed. The said core members are therefore provided in their abutting faces with coacting sockets 5, forming openings or seats when the core members are together, which receive the rods 4, the members clamping the same sufficiently to maintain them in position. The ends of the sidewalls 1 project beyond the core members 2 and have inturned flanges 6, forming, with the ends of the core members, guideways 7 that slidably receive the end walls 8.
In order that one of the block-sections may be formed with a suitable face, the end walls 8 and the side walls 1 have at their upper edges inwardly-extending longitudinally-disposed flanges 9. A bottom 10 is adapted to be fitted against either of the open sides of the mold and extends the full length and width thereof. This bottom is detachably secured in place by clips 11, arranged against the outer faces of the side walls and having spurs 12 embedded therein, the clips being furthermore provided with hooks 13, that engage over the outer face of the bottom. The body of the mold is held together by stirrups 14, that extend across the ends of the mold and have terminal hooks 15, that engage over the outer These stirrups are preferably slightly longer than the width of the mold in order that wedges 16 may be driven between one of the side walls and the hooks lying thereover for the purpose of properly tightening the mold and preventing its accidental displacement or collapse.
In manufacturing a block the body of the mold is first placed, together with the tie-rods, and clamped in the seats 5, the end wall being placed in position and the body clamped by the stirrups 14 and wedges 16. The mold is preferably placed with the lower side uppermost and the concrete, cement, or other composition placed therein, and thus cast over the projecting headed ends of the rods. The bottom is then placed upon the filled pocket and fastened in place by the clips 11, after which the mold is inverted and the opposite pocket filled. After the composition has thoroughly set the block is removed by dismembering the mold, this being easily accomplished by removing the clips 11 and the stirrups 14, whereupon the bottom is released, the side walls may be drawn apart, and the end walls taken ofi.
The second form of mold closely approximates the above described, the only difference being that the same is employed in the manufacture of corner-blocks, necessitating a slight change in the construction of the core members and the employment of a filling-block for the purpose of providing a seat in the rear side of the block. The side walls are shown at 1 and have inwardly-extending tapering core members or sections 2, having seats 3, that receive the tie-rods L, the said members 2 constituting clamps for holding the tie-rod in place. Pockets 5 are formed above and below the core members 2 for the reception of the material forming spaced block-sections. A bottom 6*is detachably secured to the lower portion of the mold by clips 7 similar to those already described, and end walls 8 are held in guideways 9, formed at the ends of the side walls 1. Furthermore, the usual stirrups 10, extending across the ends of'the mold and hooked over the side walls 1, serve to hold the mold in place.
The difference in construction resides principally in the employment of extensions 11 of the core members, which extensions are oflset at one end of each and have coacting seats 12, that holda longitudinally-disposed tie-rod 13. Furthermore, the ends of the core members 2 having the ofl'sets 11 terminate short of the adjacent end wall 8, so that one of the pockets 5 has a right-angular extension 14, the other pocket having its adjacent end spaced therefrom, as shown in Fig. 6. In order that a seat may be formed in the end of the block having this offset or extension, a filling-block 15 is placed upon the bottom 6. Notwithstanding these changes in the interior arrangement of the mold, it will be apparent that the general structure remains exactly the same, that the core members still constitute holding means or clamps for positioning the tie-rods and maintaining them in proper position while the block is being made, and that the body of the mold is substantially the same so far as structure is concerned and may be taken apart or placed together with facility and ease.
It is thought that the advantages will be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art, the same residing in the ease and expedition with which blocks of this character may be made, and it will also be evident that the invention is not limited to the exact forms and structures shown, but may be modified in various details.
said end walls constituting the ends of thepockets and abutting against the ends of the core throughout thewidth of said pockets.
. 2. In a mold of the character described, displaceable side walls, core-sections carried by the side walls andhaving their inner sides abutted, thereby bridging the space between the side walls and forming spaced pockets, said sections having substantially flat ends, and displaceable end walls engaging with the side walls and abutted flat against the ends of the core-sections throughout the width of the same and constituting end closures for the pockets.
3. In a mold of the character described, the combination with displaceable side walls, of tapering core-sections carried thereby and having their inner sides located adjacent to each other, inturned ifianges arranged at the ends of the side walls and spaced from the ends of the core-sections forming therewith guideways, end walls slidably fitted in the guideways, and connections between the side walls.
4. In a mold of the character described, the combination with displaceable side walls hav-' ing core-sections terminating short of the side edges of the mold, of end walls fitted between the side walls, a bottom fitted against the lower edges of the side and end walls and spaced from the core-sections, and retainingclips secured to the side sections and having inturned hooks that engage beneath the bottom.
5. In a mold of the character described, the combination with walls, of a core disposed between them, a portion of said core having a tie-rod-receiving seat, said seat being disposed out of intersecting relation with the walls.
6. In a mold of the character described, the combination with walls, of a core disposed between them and having a tie-rod-receiving seat located substantially parallel to the walls.
7. In a mold of the character described, the combination with walls, of core-sections having coacting inner sides arranged to clamp a tie-rod placed therebetween.
8. In a mold of the character described, the combination with walls, of core-sections having coacting inner side faces provided with coacting grooves forming openings to receive a tie-rod placed between the sections.
9. In a mold of the character described, the combination with side walls, of core-sections located between the same and forming therewith a pocket, said sections having inner oo- IIO acting sides arranged to engage the opposite sides of a tie-rod placed therebetween and projecting into the pocket.
10, In a mold of the character described, the combination with displaceable walls, of coacting tapering core-sections carried thereby and constituting tie-rod supports.
opposite sides of the same, said core-sections forming supports for tie-rods that project into the pockets.
1a. In a mold of the character described, the combination with displaceable side walls, of tapering core-sections carried thereby and having coacting adjacent faces arranged to clamp therebetween, tie members, said coresections terminating short of the opposite side and end edges of the side Walls forming pockets, removable end Walls located between the side Walls, and means connecting the side Walls for holding the same in operative relation.
