Be it known tlltltlJfICUltGlG)1. Ar.iLi.,aciti- Zen of the United States, residing at Iona, in the county of Lyman and State of South Dakota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Checln'ein-llolders, of which thefollowing is a specification.

My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in checkrein-holders; and the object of my invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and etiicient one adapted to be readily applied to the saddle of the harness or the like, similar to an ordinary checkreinhook, and capabie of enabling a checkrein to be readily attached to and detached from the saddle or the like, wherein there is no danger of their accidental or undesigned disengagement by the movements of the animal's head.

\Vith these and other objects in view my invention consists in certain features of constructions hereinafter specified, and particularly pointed out in the claims hereto up? pended.

In the accompanying drawings, Figurel is a side view of my improved checkrein-hook, showing an over-draw checkrein attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view in detail of a part which attaches to an overdrawcheckrein, while Fig. 3 is' a top plan view of a slightly different construction of a checkreindoop, showing a side checkrein attached thereto. Fig. 4 is a top plan view in detail. showing modified means for attaching the hook to the saddle of a harness. Fig. :3 is a top View of the bearing-plate as shown in Fig. 3 by the dotted lines. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view of my complete device, and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the bearing-plate 13.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 indicates a checkrein of the usual form.

2 indicates a leather tongue or other flexible material, having at one end an aperture 3,-de-

signed to admit a checkrein and having a buttonhole consisting of a slit 1, terminating at one end in a circular hole 5, adapted to engage the hook or button 6. 5o

6 indicates a hook or button formed of an oblong-shaped head 7, forwardly projecting, a neck 8, around which the circular hole 5 is seated between the head 7 and the base 9, and having a base-plate adapted to be secured to a stationary support provided with eyes 10 10 for fastening purposes, as shown in Figs. 4 and (5, and the loop 11 is to engage a crupper- .strap, or said holder 6 may be supported by the usual threaded shank 12, as shown in Fig. 1. \Vhile these are the preferred means for attaching the device, other known means may be employed without departing from the spirit of my invention.

in carrying out my nrcsentinvention I have 5 provided a bearing-plate consisting of a metallic plate 13, as best shown in Figs. 5 and 7 of the drawings. The intermediate portion of the plate 13 is stamped out, forming the fas toning fingers or points 14 14, which are 7 passed through the strap 2 and bent down against the outside of the strap, ther by securely fastening the bearing-plate 13 in the aperture 3, the edges of the metallic plate being concaved at the ends 15 and convcxed on the sides 16. This arrangement being applied strengthens and stitfens the loop and permits the checkrein to move freely with the movement of the animals head.

The buttonhole in the tongue2 is so shaped to engage the holder 6 when turned in a manner admitting the forward projecting part of the hook or button first, thus making it safe from undesigned disengagement and constituting a durable and an effective device. 5

\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is-

1. In a checkrein-holder the combination with a device comprising a neck, having a forwardly-projecting head thereon, and a base- 9 plate extending laterally beyond the head to the front and rear thereof, of a flexible hookstrap having a slit therein, and a circular aperture joining the slit, at the rear end of the latter, substantially as described.

2. A checkrein-holder consisting of adeviee comprising a base, a neck, having aforwardlyprojecting head lying parallel with said base, a hook-strap doubled upon itself to form an aperture to receive a checkrein, and 8. rectangular bearing-plate applied Within the aperture of said hook-strap, and having retaining-points struck up from the intermediate portion of said bearing-plate passed through said strap and bent downwardly against the outside of the same, substantially as described.

3. In a checkrein-holder consisting of a hook-strap, having at one end an aperture adapted to receive a side checkrein, and a bearing-plate 13, applied in said aperture, said bearingplatc having upwardly-turned curvilinear flanges formed upon its ends, and downwardly-tn rned curvilinearflanges formed upon its sides, and the intermediate portion stamped out forming fastening-fingers, substantially as and for the purpose described.
