SEWER-TRAP.

To all, whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, EZRA LOUGHREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sewer-Traps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object to provide a sewer-trap which shall be strong and simple in construction and durable in operation and adapted to be readily cleaned and repaired without injury to the walls of the receiving or catch basin in which it is embedded.
Sewer-traps somewhat similar in general character to my invention have heretofore been used; but such devices contain many undesirable features which it is the purpose of my invention to avoid. Thus in some of such constructions a valve is hinged to the inside of a casing back of a plate or flange in such a manner that when the partscomposing the hinge become indperative from accident, rust, or other cause it has been found impractical to renew the parts composing such hinge or even to have access to such parts for that purpose, because of the fact that the valve must be raised in order to have access to the inside of the body of the trap, and the hinge parts are then concealed by the valve. Efforts have been made heretofore to overcome such difliculty, and in some cases the valve has been hinged to a face-plate which has been made independently of the body of the'trap and secured to such body by means of lugs formed on said face-plate and body and secured together by means of bolts and similar devices.

In such constructions a projecting flange has been formed on the face-plate having a substantially vertical wall adapted to be built into the wall of the catch-basin so as to stand substantially flush therewith, the face-plate being arranged within the outer edge of the wall of the basin and the joint between the face-plate and body of the trap thereby embedded in the masonry, so that while the face plate may be removed from the body of the trap this cannot be done until the masonry surrounding the face-plate has been removed. These disadvantages I overcome by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical horizontal section of a trap embodying my invention applied to a receiving or catch basin of ordinary construction. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the trap, showing its hood raised. Fig. 3 is a front view of the same. Fig. l is a sectional view of a modification of means for securing the hood to the body of the trap.
As illustrated in the drawings, A represents the body of the trap, preferably rectangular in cross-section, so as to be readily built in the brickwork of the receiving-basin. The rear portion A of the body is preferably made circular to correspond in outline with the sewer. The front of the body is provided with a face-plate B, formed integral with the body A. A casing C is formed on the faceplate, its upper portion projecting beyond the face-plate and its front extending downward in an inclined line inwardly toward the face-plate B. The casing C is provided with an enlarged aperture which is covered by a valve E, hinged at its upper portion to the inside of the casing C. A spring-catch F is secured to the upper portion of the body of the trap. When the valve E is raised, its lower edge may be held suspended by means of such catch. WVhen it is desired to drop the lower end of the valve, the end of the catch may be pressed back, so as to release the catch from the valve.
A hood D is hinged to the body of the trap by means of lugs a and (Z and hinge-pins a. The lower edge of the hood may be held suspended by means of a hook.H. The hood, however, may be made detachable from the body A by means of hook-sockets G, formed on the body A, and hinge-pins d, secured to the lugs (Z of the hood and adapted to engage the hook-sockets G.
The body of the trap is built into the masonry of the catch-basin, with the face-plate B preferably against the wall of the basin. The casing C will then extend beyond the wall of the basin, thereby bringing the pivoted upper end of the valve E beyond said wall.
When constructed and arranged in the manner described, the parts are all easy of access and adapted to be readily renewed or repaired when desired without disturbing the body of the trap or masonry in which it is embodied. If the hinge supporting the valve E becomes impaired in any manner, the hinge-pins supporting the valve E may be driven out through the projecting upper portion of the casing C and a new hinge connection readily constructed.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a trap-body, of a casing having its face projecting at its upper portion from said body and inclined downward and inward, a valve hinged to the projecting portion of said casing, and a hood hinged to said body so as to cover said casing, substantially as shown and described.

3. The combination with a trap-body, of a valve-casing adapted to extend beyond the wall of a receiving-basin, avalvehinged to said casing beyond said wall, and a hood hinged to said body, substantially as shown and described.
