COMPANY, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
REGISTER.
Application filed April 12, 1915. Serial No. 20,699;
To all whom it may concern: i
.Be it known that I, HOWARD S. HART, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, Hartford county, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Registers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improved register construction.
The object of thepresent invention is to provide a simple and effective means for connecting an outlet flue or so-called stackhead with the register proper so as to guard against leakage and-at the same time so as to provide adequate, and guarantee permanent, clearance for the register valve or louvre.
In the preferred form of my invention as shown in the drawings I have illustrated the same as applied to a side wall register.
In the drawings,-Figure l is a front elevation partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a section on the line Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33.
1 represents a stack-head which is usually made of tin.
2 represents the main frame of a register of the side-wall type. The frame has the usual central passage of a size and shape corresponding closely to the stack-head outlet to which it is to be connected. The inner edge of the main frame constitutes what I may term a supporting ledge and is preferably slightly depressed as shown, although this is not essential in all cases. The ledge portion of the frame is provided with a suitable groove, recess, cavity or the like, inclicated at 4, into which the edge of the stackhead may be rolled or clenched as at 5. By this means the top, bottom and sides of the stack-head outlet are securely connected to the register, so as to perform the double function of holding the register in place, and in turn holding the top, bottom and sides of the stack-head in place so as to afford full and permanent clearance for the valve 6 as it swings. carried by a removable grille plate 7 which is secured to the register frame in any desired way, as by screws 88. The edges of the grille plate 7 preferably lock the rolled over edges of the stack-head 1 in the receiving cavity or cavities of the supporting Specification of Ietters Patent.-
The valve 6 is Patented. Dec. 28 1915- ledge 3 without the aid of any other mechanical fastening device.
It will be understood that the valve 6 is usually hinged at its upper edge so that it binding, should be 'provided at the rear of the valve. Heretofore, in many instances, the insecure positioning of the stack-head resulted'in a bulging of the same into the path of the valve, making it difficult, and in some instances impossible to operate the same.
7 By my new improvement, I am permitted to omit the customary rearwardly extending border flange, such as frequently provided in connection with such registers, designed to slip loosely into the endof the stack-head outlet. By this means I am able to save substantially in the expense of manufacturing. Furthermore, in the present case the method of construction serves to better unite the parts and prevent leakage. The holding pocket or cavity 4 is preferably formed by a depressed corrugation extending longitudinally of the ledge 3, which corrugation provides at once an outwardly facing groove into which the stack-head may be clenched, and also adds strength to the frame.
It should be understood that it is not essential in all instances that the grille plate should lap over or lock the clenched edge of the stack-head, although in many instances it is a preferable form of connection and in such instances it affords added security. y
I am aware that a variety of modifications can be made without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention.
What I claim is:
1. In a register, a frame having a central passage, a depressed supporting ledge at the edge of said passage, said ledge having a cavity arranged to receive and hold the bent over edge of a stack-head, and a perforated grille plate arranged to be supported by said ledge and to overlie the bent over edge of a stack-head to aid in holding the bent over edge in place.
2; In a register, a frame having a central passage, a depressed supporting ledge at bent over edge of a stack-head, a perforated grille plate arranged to be supported by said ledge, and to overlie the bent over edge of a stack-head to assist in holding said edge in place, with means for securing said grille plate in place on said ledge.
8. In a register, a frame having a central passage, a depressed supporting ledge at the edge of said passage, said ledge having a cavity arranged to receive and hold the bent over edge of a stack-head, a perforated grille plate arranged to be supported by said ledge, and to aid in holding the bent over edge of a stack-head in place, said cavity being formed by a depressed corrugation forming an outwardly facing groove.
4. In a re ister a frame havin a central 2: v passage the lnner portion of the same constl- .tuting a supporting ledge, said ledge being shaped to receive and hold the bent over edge of a stack-head, and a perforated grille plate arranged to be supported upon the ledge portion of said frame.
5. In combination, a register frame having a central stack-head passage, a stack-head fitting said passage and projecting through the same, the edge of said frame being shaped to receive the clenched over edge of the stack-head, said stack-head being clenched over said shaped edge, a grille arranged to be carried by said frame and HOKVARD S. HART.
