UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
`VILLIAM ROW/*BOTTOM AND JOHN ROWTBOTTOM, OF ALLEGHENY, FA.
CESSPOOL-WELL.
SPEGIF1CATION'forming part of Letters IPatent No. 292,953, dated february 5, 1884. Application filed June 22, 1883. (No model.)
provement in Cesspool-Vells; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and
. exact description thereof. i
yIO
As heretofore usually constructed, cesspoolwells have been madewith the pipe which connects with the sewer running directly into the well. This construction has been found very obj ectionable, because the coarser matters in the well have-clogged the mouth of the pipe and stopped the discharge from the well, causing it to iill up rapidly and require frequent cleaning. It has been suggested to cover the mouth of the pipe with a grating or screen, also placed in the well. The purpose of our invention is to obviate this objection and construct the well with an external chamber extending up the side, and provided with a grating between the Well and chamber, and having the dischargepipe opening into the chamber, so that the coarser matters will be prevented from obtaining access to the mouth of the discharge-pipe.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will noW describeit by reference to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l is a vertical section, and Fig. 2 a cross-section on the line m a: of Fig. 1.
The well a is constructed in the usual way. Connected to it is a chamber, b, of any desired size, and communicating with the well a by means of an opening, c, in which there is a grating, d, of any desired construction, having the interstices between the bars ofthe required size to prevent the passage of the larger Inatters in the well to the chamber. The inner end of the discharge-pipe e terminates in the chamber b, and its outer end runs down to a sewer, j', in the usual way. By this arrangement the larger matters, such as are liable to clog the discharge-pipe, are prevented from obtaining access to it, so that the well is at all times properly drained, and there is no danger of the pipe becoming clogged.
lt is admitted that prior t0 our invention sinks and similar structures having gratings and perforated division-walls for preventing the clogging of the end of the soil-pipe had been devised. It is also admitted that privywells having a screen or grating over the end ofthe soil-pipe'are old, and we disclaim such constructions.
We ydo not limit ourselves to any'particular form or construction of the chamber b and grating d, but claim them, broadly, in connection with a cesspool-well.
lVhatwe claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the well a with the auX- iliary chamber b, grating d, dischargepipe'e, and sewer f, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands this 20th day of June, A. D. 1883.
