ASH-SIFTER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 782,926, dated February 21, 1905.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PHILIPPE EDOUARD ROY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing in the city and district of Montreal, in the Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ash- Sifters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such aswill enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention consists in certain new and useful improvements in ash receiving and sifting means adapted to be used in combination for the purpose of receiving ashes and cinders from beneath a stove-grate and sifting of the ashes to separate the cinders therefrom; and it consists in certain features of novelty in the detail construction and arrangement thereof, all as hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.

The object of the invention is to provide means in the form of a portable receptacle which may be placed in the stove to take the place of the ordinary ash-pan thereof, which portable receptacle is provided with a siftingscreen adapted to render the same serviceable as a sifter and also with a removable slide or closure cooperating with the screen to prevent dropping of the contents of the receptacle within the ash-pan compartment of the stove or upon the floor when the portable receptacle is removed from the stove in trans porting it to a convenient place for sifting the ashes.

Referring to the annexed drawings, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view taken approximately centrally through the combined structure when in position for sifting ashes. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the removable ash-receptacle, showing the slidable closure for the bottom portion in closed and open position. 7

As indicated in the drawings, 5 is a box or compartment comprising a lower section 6 and an upper section 7 which is adapted to be placed upon the lower section 6, said upper section being provided with inwardly-projecting flanges 8, extending longitudinally thereof, which are adapted to serve as guiding means for the upper portion when placing it upon the lower portion and also as retaining means to prevent lateral displacement thereof after it has been properly positioned.

Within the lower compartment 6 are retaining-clips 9, a plurality of such clips being provided at each end of the receptacle 6, and said clips are adapted to serve as supporting means for the longitudinally-disposed strips or runways 10, which extend entirely across the compartment 6that is, from end to end thereofsaid strips-1O being provided with downwardly-projecting angular extensions 11, adapted to be seated in said clips 9 to support the strips 10. The strips 10 serve as supporting means for the removable ash-receptacle 12. which receptacle is adapted to serve as an ordinary ash-pan within a stove.

The receptacle 12 has secured within its bottom portion a wire cloth or screen 13, and below the screen are provided inwardly-projecting flanges 14, which extend longitudinally of the receptacle 12 and approximately the entire length thereof, said flanges being formed upon the side walls 15 of said portable receptacle.

The flanges 14c serve as a supporting means for the slidable plate 16, which, as will be noted, rests below the screen 13 and serves as a closure for the lower portion of the receptacle. The plate 16 is preferably an imperferate member, which prevents the escape of ashes from the portable ash-receptacle through the bottom thereof.

Projecting outwardly from the inclined end wall 17 of the receptacle 12 is a loop 18, with which may be interlocked any convenient manipulating-handle-as, for example, an ordinary stove-poker, as 19-provided with an angularly-extending projection 20, while a handle 21 is provided upon the inner face of said inclined wall 17, near the upper portion thereof, to serve as means for lifting said receptacle from the ash-compartment of the stove. In addition to the handle 21, which is a fixed handle, the pivoted handle or bail 22, of ordinary construction, is provided to serve as means whereby the receptacle 12 may be carried from place to place.

The operation of the device is as follows: The slide 16 is properly positioned within the receptacle 12, after which said ash-receptacle is placed in position within the stove, and said receptacle serves as an ordinary ash-receiving pan, which when full may be removed from the stove by means of the handles 21 22 and transported to the receiving-box 5 and placed upon the slides 10, after which the slide 16 may be Withdrawn, the handle 19 connected with the loop 18, and the cover 7 placed in position, after which the receptacle 12 may be reciprocated within the compartment 5 until the ashes have been properly sifted out, after which the cinders remaining in the receptacle 12 may be suitably deposited and the slide reinforced, so that the ash-receptacle may be placed in the stove. Thus means are provided for receiving ashes and cinders which may be properly sifted without removal except in the process of sifting.

While I have shown in the accompanying drawings the preferred form of my invention, it will be understood that 1 do not limit myself to the precise form shown, for many of the details may be changed in form or position without afl'ecting the operativeness or utility of my invention, and I therefore reing claim or of mechanical equivalents to the structures set forth. c

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

In a device of the character described, the combination comprising a lower receptacle, clips on the inner side of the end walls of the same, longitudinal supporting members, having bent ends disposed in said clips, a movable receptacle, having an open bottom and top, disposed on said supporting members and provided with flanges extending inwardly from its side walls, a slid-able, imperforate member disposed on said flanges, a perforated member secured to the walls of the last-named receptacle above said flanges, a loop adapted to receive a member for reciprocating it, and a cover provided with inwardly-extending flanges and adapted to interlock with the upper edges of said lower receptacle.
