CALENDAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 782,102, dated February 7, 1905.
Application filed June 3, 1904- Serial Nu. 210,931.
To a]? [Ir/unit it TIM/,7 concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN A. BRENNAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vest Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calendars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanyingdrawings, and to letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My present invention has reference to improvements in calendars: and the invention relates more particularly to a novel construction of calendar with a view of providing a perpetual calendar which may be used over and over and from year to year and which, if desired, is of especial benefit for advertising purposes because of the fact that at the end of the year the calendar has not been rendered useless.
The invention has for its principal objects to provide a neatly and simply constructed calendar which can be used perpetually and which comprises a card or main body of any suitable material having upon its face rows of spaces variously provided with the names of the months, the names of the days of the week, and the numbers indicating the dates, combined with suitable guiding means, preferably in the form of strands of twine, cord, thread. wire, or the like, upon which are movably arranged suitable indicating devices, preferably in the form of colored beads or other suitably-formed bodies, to be used as indicators.
The invention consists, primarily, in the novel calendar hereinafter more fully set forth; and, furthermore, this invention con sists inthe arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts, all of which will be described in detail in the followingspecification and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim which are appended to and which form an essential part of this specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a face view of the perpetual calendar embodying the principles of my pres ent invention. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section taken on line 3 3 in said Fig. 1.
Similar characters of reference are employed in the above-described views to indicate corresponding parts.-
Referring now to the said drawings, the reference character 1 indicates the complete calendar, and the same comprises a main body 2 of any desirable ornamental configuration and which may be suitably ornamented upon its face, as will be clearly evident. This said main body 2 is usually made of cardboard; but the same may be made of any other material, such as a thin board, of wood, celluloid, or any other plastic material. The said main body may be provided with a suitable perforation 3 for its suspension from a nail or the like; but it will be understood that any other means of suspension may be employed. Upon the face of the said main body the same is provided with an arrangement of ornamental divisions or indicatingspaces at, forming in the present instance eight rows of such divisions or indicating-spaces. These rows of divisions l have indicated by the letters 1/. I), c, (I, (a, f, 5 and /1, respectively, the rows 11 and being each divided into six divisions or indicating-spaces 4, in each of which is printed or otherwise arranged therein the name of a month. These divisions or indicating-spaces may also have arranged therein the number of days corrcspomling to the month stated in the division or space. The row a is divided into seven divisions or indicating-spaces 4:, each division or space being provided in any suitable manner with the name of a day. The remaining rows (1, c, f, and g are each divided into seven spaces or divisions bearing the consecutive numbers from 1 to 28, inclusive, and the last row /1 isdivided into three divisions or spaces L, bearing the numbers 29, 30, and 31, respectively, and into one larger space or division 5, which is preferably provided with the reading matter found in said division or space 5 and indicated in Fig. l of the drawings. The upper part of the said main body 2 may be provided with I suitably-disposed retaining means, preferably a space 6 for the reception of any suitable advertisement or other matter of interest and is preferably provided with the words Perpetual calendar. The lower part of the said main body 2 may also be provided with aspace 7 for the reception of an advertisement or other matter of interest. The side spaces 8 and 9 of the said body 2 are provided with in the form of holes or perforations 10, through which has been passed a piece of twine, cord, thread, or wire, as 11, the end portions 12 and 13 of the same being suitably fastened at the closely-located holes 10 and 14 and 10 and 15, as clearly illustrated in said Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. The said twine, cord, thread, or wire 11 is threaded through the various perforations in such a manner that a suitable strand or portion 16 will be located directly across a portion of each row of divisions or spaces 1, as clearly indicated in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings. Strung upon each strand or portion 16 of the twine, cord, thread, or wire 11 is a bead or other suitable body or indicator 17, each bead or body 17 being movably and slidabl y arranged upon its respective strand 16 of the cord, twine, thread, or wire 11, that each head or indicating body 16 may be arranged at one side of the main body 2 of the calendar or may he slid forward upon the strand or portion 16 of the twine, cord, thread, or wire to be placed in any one of the divisions or spaces 4: of the row of divisions to indicate, respectively, the month, day, and date. Thus in Fig. 1 of the drawings the bead or body 17 upon the strand 16 in the row a has been moved into the space 1, which is provided with the word May, the bead 17 upon the strand 16 in the row 0 has been moved into the space 4 bearing the word Wed, and the head 17 upon the strand 16 in the row g has been moved into the space 4 bearing the numeral 25, thereby indicating May, Wednesday, the 25th. In this manner any other combination can be produced to indicate the current month, the day of the week, and the date.
Of course it will be understood that some changes may be made in the various arrangements and combinations of the parts without departing from the scope of my present invention. Hence I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the parts as described in the foregoing specification and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is* 1. In a calendar, the combination, with a main body. provided with parallel rows of 1 spaces bearing calendar-notations, and with a retaining means at each end of each row of spaces, said retaining means being located at points away from the marginal edges of the main body and between the said edges and the respective ends of said parallel rows or spaces, a fixed and rigid guiding means arranged directly upon each row of calendar-notations, each guiding means being connected at its end portions with the retaining means at the ends of each row of calendar-notations, whereby each row of calendar-notations is provided with a fixed guiding means, and an indicating device slidably arranged upon each guiding means, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a calendar, the combination, with a main body provided with parallel rows of spaces bearing calendar-notations, and with a retaining means at each end of each row of spaces, said retaining means being located at points away from the marginal edges of the main body and between the said edges and the respective ends of said parallel rows or spaces, a fixed and rigid guiding means arranged directly upon each row of calendar-notations, each guiding means being connected at its end portions with the retaining means at the ends of each row of calendar-notations, whereby each row of calendar-notations is provided with a fixed guiding means, and a perforated bead movably arranged upon each guiding means, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In a calendar, the combination, with a main body provided with calendar-notations, and said body having a series of perforations located near opposite edges of said body, a piece of twine or the like extending into and through said perforations and forming strands which are arranged in close juxtaposition to said calendar-notations, and an indicating device movabl y arranged upon each strand, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4:. In a calendar, the combination, with a main body provided with calendar-notations, and said body having a series of perforations located near opposite edges of said body, a piece of twine or the like extending into and through said perforations and forming strands which are arranged in close juxtaposition to said calendar-notations, and a perforated bead movably arranged upon each strand, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the invention set forth above I have hereunto set my hand this 31st day of May, 1904.
JOHN A. BRENNAN.
