PATENT OFFICE.
WELLING G. SOULE, OF SAVANNAH, NEW YORK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 782,076, dated February 7, 1905.
Application filed May 2, 1904. Serial No. 205,873.
New York, have invented a new and Improved Toy, of: which the following is a specification. The invention relates to wheel toys; and the ob ect had in view is to provide a toy of this character which shall be novel in construction and have power means which when wound will operate to propel the toy in one direction and automatically react, propelling it in the opposite direction.
The invention consists of the special construction, arrangement, and combinat on of features shown in the accompanying drawings and hereinafter fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the subjoined claims.
1n the drawings, Figure l is a top plan view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view on line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a view showing a fiat blank forming a part of my invention.
In the practice of my invention 1 fashion a vehicle-body A into the shape of an automobile-body, forming the same of a suitable one-piece blank B, (see Fig. 3,) having its end and side extensions 0 turned up and suitably bent into shape. The said end and side extensions may be secured to their bent position by interlocking parts, solder, or other approved means. The ends of the side extensions of the blank B are provided with longitudinal slots D, wherein axles Eare loosely arranged. ()n the projecting ends of the axles I fixedly secure suitable wheels In further constructing my invention, 1 fixedly arrange open rings or suitable hooks Gr on the axles and connect them with an elastic cord or rubber bands H. A pin 1 may be arranged on the upper side of the body A. providing securing means for one end of the elastic cord or rubber band, or a guidefor said band, as shown in Fig. 2.
In use my improved toy is pushed along on the floor or ground, effecting rotation of the wheels. 1 The axles .beingfixedly secured to the wheels, obviously rotation of the latter will turn them and place the elastic cord or rubber bands under tension by winding action thereof upon the axles. The elastic cord or rubber bands being wound up and placed under tension, as just-described when the toy is released the power thus stored up will operate, propelling it in one direction until the power is expended. The momentum thus imparted to the toy will effect rewinding of the elastic cord or rubber band ends, and thereby operate to propel, returning the toy toward its point of starting. Continued winding and rcwinding of the power means by momentum imparted to the toy will continue propelling action of the toy until the power thereby stored up is expended.
Locating the pin 1 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 has advantage in serving to hold the rubber band to position, drawing from the center of the body when it is being wound on or from the axles, and thus obviating endwise mbvement of the axles. With such construction the wheels are prevented rubbing or chafing action against the body and whereby the use of collars or similar means therefor on the axles are rendered unnecessary.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a vehicle-body formed of a blank bent into shape, the blank having slots forming suitable bearings, of axles arranged in said slot-bearings having wheels fixedly secured to their projecting ends, hooks fixedly secured on said axles, an elastic band with its ends in holding engagement with said hooks, and means holding the said band centrally located, substantially as described.
2. A blank for a toy vehicle-body, stamped in one piece, with side and end extensions, and with notches in the front and rear edges of the side extensions, forming bearings for the purpose set forth. a
VVELLING 'C. SOULE.
