Be it known that LCI-IRISTIAN A.(1iIuIs'rL-\N sux', a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Perth Amboy, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Cutting Clay Products, of which the following is a specification.

For the purpose of supporting the inner end of the tilting top 15 Hush with the tops of the tables 10 and 2 a bar 1S is secured to the top 11 and has i1pwardly-projecting arms 19, provided with seats 50, on which the inner end of the table rests.
On the outer end of the tilting' table-top a bracket 51 is secured to support the pallet 52, against which the clay products abut, said bracket comprising a horizontal member 53, provided with an elongated slot 51, through which screws 51 project and enter the under side of the tabletop, thus rendering the bracket longitudinally adjustable, and a vertical member 55, pivotally secured to the horil Zontal member at 56, so that it can be turned j down out of the way when desired. It will therefore be seen that by reason of the top of l the slidable table 40 being pivoted it can be turned down and the clay sections which` have been fed thereon removed on end on the pallet, this being' the position in which they are required to be in before being burned.
An arched bar passes over the top of the base of the tilting table and through holes 61 in the lower bars of the slidable table 10 and has its ends secured to the base 1 and serves to guide said tables in their movement and hold them on their tracks. For the purpose of holding' said tables together until a predetermined point in their travel is reached and then releasing them a gravity-catch 65 is pivoted on one of the legs 12 at theforward end of the table 10, the outer end provided with a notch 66, arranged to engage the projecting end of a bar 67, secured to the legs 42n at the inner end of the table 40 when the tables are together, and the inner end forked at 68 and having a wheel 69 journaled therein adapted when the tables have reached the predetermined point in their travel where they are to be separated to ride up on a bar 70 and turn said lever so that the notched end will be disengaged from the. bar 67, thereby unlocking' the tables.
Pairs of oppositely-positioned wings havind their ends spaced apart are mounted on the top of the table l0, each pair comprising upwardly-projecting members 80, hinged to horizontal members 81, provided with elongated slots 82, through which screws 83 pass and enter the top of table, said wings being held in their adjusted positions by means of bolts a, the bolts at one end passing through ears on the members 80 of the wings and having nuts 80b on said ends and the other ends pivoted to ears on the members 81. It will therefore be seen that the wings may be adjusted apart laterally and turned to the desired angle to suit the shape and size of the clay product passing between them.
An oscillatory device for cutting the clay product as it passes between the wings is mounted on the table 10 and comprises vertical rings 84 encircling the top of the table 10 and connected together by bars 85, the ends of the lower bar projecting through the rings and entering holes in the bars 14a and 15b of the table 10 to thereby pivot the cutting device, and wires 85 project through slots 80 in the top of the tables, which slots register with the spaces between the wings, the lower ends of said wires being connected to the upper ends of links 87, the lower ends of which engage a bar 88, supported in arms 89, projecting upwardly from the inner periphery of the rings, and the upper ends of said wires are connected to the lower hooked ends of threaded bolts 89, which project through an elongated slot in a bar 90, mounted between lug's 91 on the outer periphery of the upper part of the rings, encircle the upper ends of the bolts 89 between nuts 93 thereon and washers 94, resting on the top of the slotted bar. It will therefore be seen that as the cutting device is oscillated back and forth the wires will pass across the table through the slits therein and between the ends of the wings, thereby cutting the clay product into sections as it passes between said wings and finally onto the table Lt0.
For the purpose of returning the table 10 after it has been pushed over by the travel of the clay product across it pivoted links 95 and 96 are provided, one of said links being pivoted to a rod 97, secured between the front legs of the table 10 and the other link connected to a reeiprocatory rod 98, mounted in bearings 99 on the front legs of the table 2 and having a lever 100 for turning it.

' this form of my invention each wing consists of an upwardly-projeeting member 101, provided with slots 102 and pivotedon a horizontal member 103, which is provided with elongated slots 104, through which screws 105 pass and enter the top of the table 10, whereby the wing may be adjusted laterally, and the members 101 are provided with ears to which the inner ends of bolts 107 are pivoted, and the member 103 with slotted ears through which the other ends of the bolts pass and are provided with nuts 108, whereby the wings may be adjusted on their pivots.
The operation is as follows: The parts being in the position shown in Fig. 1, the clay product, which is fed continuously from a clay-machine, passes onto the table 2 and across the slidable tables 10 and 40, which are locked together, and during its progress across the table l0 the cutting device is drawn across the table, severing the clay product into sections. As the clay product progresses across the tables 10 and 40 it moves said tables away from the table 2, and when the tables reach a predetermined point the gravity-lever is operated to unlock them, by`
which time the sections of the clay product have passed onto the table 40, which ismoved to the right-hand end of the base 1 and the top tilted down, so that the clay sections can be removed therefrom on the pallet and submitted to the burning process. At the same time that the table 40 is moved to the right the table 10 is returned by means of the lever 100, and after the clay sections have been removed from the table 40 it is again returned and locked by the gravity-catch to the table 10. The cutting device is then drawn in the opposite direction across the table l0 and cuts the clay product, which has by this time passed across the table 10, and the operation and springs 92 IOO IOS

l do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the details of construction and arrangement as herein described and illustrated, as it is manifest that variations and modifications may be made in the features of construction and arrangement in the adaption of the device to various conditions of use without dej'iarting' from the spirit and scope of my invention and improvements. I therefore reserve the right to all such variation and modification as properly fall within the scope of my invention and the terms o'tl the following' claims.

A machine for cutting' clay products, comprising' a stationary table, a slidable table having' slots through its top, tmpositely-positioned pairs of wings, the ends of each pair spaced from the ends of the adjacent pair so as to leave slots registering with the slots in the table, and a transverse cutting' device comprising' cutting-wires passing' through said slots, anda slidable table having' a tiltable top, substantially as described.
