TUCK-FOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 781,831, dated February '7, 1905.
Application filed November 21, 1902. ScrialNo.132,275.
To all wit/112i. it may concern:
Be it known that I. ALEXANDER Lannsonnu,
a citizen of the United States. residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fail-field and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Tuck-Folders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in tuck-folders for sewing-machines, and is designed and adapted more particularly for use in connection with family sewing-machines.
The object of the invention is to provide simple and effective means for permitting the ready introduction and removal of the fabric for successive seams, the guiding of the fabric with but slight attention from the operator. and the ready adjustment for different widths of tucks and spaces or equidistant clusters of the same.
The invention consists of a tuck-folder having a folder-blade mounted upon a turntable which is provided with a fastening device per mitting the adjustment of the folder-blade 5 longitudinally and laterally as the work de- T mands, as 1 will proceed now more particularly to set forth and finally claim.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, in the several figures of which 3 like parts are similarly designated, Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a top plan view with the folder-blade adjusted laterally. Fig. A: is a longitudinal section, on a larger scale, taken substantially in the plane of the line A B, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a cross-section on the scale of Fig. 4, taken substantially in the plane of line C D, Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the turn-table. Fig. T is a perspective view of the friction- 4 washer for the turn-table.
The supporting-frame comprises a baseplate 1, having an over-reaching arm 2. provided with a returned end 3. Upon this returned end is mounted the folder-blade A of ordinary construction, excepting as hereinafter specified. This folder-blade has the index or setting scale 5, with which cooperates an index-finger 6, fixed in the end 3, whereby said blade may be accurately adjusted for any desired width of tuck. There is provided a 5 longitudinal slot 7 in the folder-blade to admit of this adjustment.
The end 3 is provided with a vertical bore 8, counterbored at 9 to receive, respectively, the hub 10 and flange 11, constituting parts 0f the turn-table, as seen in Figs. 4: and The face of the flange 11 is provided with a vertical rib 12, having parallel edges and of a width accurately to enter and engage the slot 7 of the folder-blade. A screw-threaded post 13, risingfrom the turn-table, carries a nut H, between which and the folder-blade is interposed a washer l5, resting upon the folderbladeand serving to transmit to it the pressure of the nut when said nut is turned down upon said washer to hold the folder-blade upon the turn-table. The opposite side of the bore 8 is also counterbored at 16 to receive a springwasher 17 or spring, and the hub 10 of the turn-table is screw-tapped to receive a shoul- 7o dered screw 18, whose head bears upon the washer 17 in such manner as to put tension upon the turn-table with relation to the folderblade, and thus hold said blade frictionally in place.
It will be seen that by the engagement of the rib 12 with the slot in the folder-blade not only is such blade guided in its longitudinal adjustment, but that it is capable of lateral adjustment as well, as indicated in Fig. 3, without affecting the lixity of its longitudinal adjustment, and, further, that in both adjustments the nut 1% controls.
The spacing-blade 19 may be of usual construction, provided with a scale 20 and coop- 5 erating with an index-linger 21, both the spacing-blade and index-finger 21 being arranged upon the base-plate 1. The spacingblade is provided with a longitudinal slot 22, through which passes the shouldered screw 23, having an interposed washer 2%, the said screw being tapped in the base-plate.
The frame is adapted to be removably secured to the bed-plate of a sewing-machine, as by a screw passed through the hole 25 in the base-plate.
The spacing-blade cooperates with the folder-blade in the usual manner.
Other variations in the invention are permissible within the principle thereof, since the gist of the invention is the provision of a folder-blade with a fastening device which serves not only as such, but also serves to efi'ect a twofold adjustment of the folder-blade without interference.
What I claim is 1. A tuck-folder for sewing-machines, having a supporting-frame, comprising a baseplate, an overreaching arm rising from said base-plate and provided with a returned end, and a spacing-blade applied to the base-plate, combined with a folder-blade slotted longitudinally, a turn-table mounted in the returned end of said overreaching arm and provided with a vertical rib engaging the slot in the folder-blade whereby said folder-blade maybe adjusted longitudinally, a clamping device carried by the turn-table and acting upon the folder-blade to fix the longitudinal adjustment of said folder-blade upon said turn-table, and an independent friction connection between the turn-table and the returned end of the overreaching arm, whereby the turn-table may be rotated axially so as to adjust the folder-blade laterally without disturbing its longitudinal adjustment.
2. A tuck-folder for sewing-machines, having a supporting-frame, comprising a baseplate, an overreaching arm rising from said base-plate and provided with a returned end, and a spacing-blade applied to the base-plate, combined with a folder-blade slotted longitudinally, a turn-table mounted in the returned end of said overreaching arm and provided with a vertical rib engaging the slot in the folder-blade whereby said folder-blade may be adjusted longitudinally, a screwthreaded post rising From said turn-table and provided with a clamping-nut and washer for fixing the longitudinal adjustment of the folder-blade, and an independent friction connection between the turn-table and the returned end of the overreaching arm, whereby the turn-table may be rotated axially so as to adjust the folderblade laterally without disturbing its longitudinal adjustment on the turn-table.
3. A tuck-"folder for sewing-machines, having a supporting-frame, comprising a baseplate, an voverreaching arm rising from said base-plate and provided with a returned end, and a spacing-blade applied to the base-plate, combined with a folder-blade slotted longitudinally, a turn-table mounted in the returned end of said overreaching arm and provided with a vertical rib engaging the slot in the folder-blade whereby said folder-blade may be adjusted longitudinally, and aclarnping device for fixing the longitudinal adjustment of the folder-blade, said turn-table having a hub fitted in a bore in the returned end of the overreaching arm, and a frictionwasher held between said end and turn-table to frictionally hold the turn-table in given position and permit of its axial rotation to effect a lateral adjustment of the folderblade.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 20th day of November, A. D. 1902.
ALEXANDER LAUBSCHER.
