Description

` TO ALL WHOM IT MAY GONCERN:
CORNELIUS BOLLINGER, OF HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 78,179, dated May 26, 1868 5 anteclatecl Mag/ 14',\1868.
IMPROVEMENT IM' STEAM-ENGINE Hsro'ns.
@te tlgmte feierten tutti this ettett mit mating niet otite stmt.
Be it known that I, Comenius BOLLINGER, of Harrisburg, Dauphin county, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and use i'ul Improvements in Pistons for Pumps, Steam-Enginesptcf; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient 'to enable any person skilled inthe art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvements' without further invention or experiment. i
The Vnature of my invention and improvements consists in a'cone, .working through the head of tue piston, and screwing into the head, or on to the rod, or both, and acting on the sectors Awhich tighten the packing, to force them ont, to tighten the packing when required; and in some lugs on the cone, combined with lugs on the cylinder-head, to hold the cone while the piston is turned to screw in the cone, and tighten the packing.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a plan of the lower endof the piston. Figure 2 is a plan of the lower side of thepiston, with the outer plate and cone removed, to show the l sectors and packing.
fastened to the cylinder-head.
Figure 3 is an elevation of the piston, and Figure 4 a section, showing it cutv4 throughV the centre. n In these drawings, A is a piston-head, firmly fastened to the rod B, which is to traverse the piston, if used in a pump, or to be traversed by the piston', if used in a steam-enginc. The head, A, has three lugs, C C, on it, to hold the lower plate, D, of the piston a given distance from A, to which it is-fastencd by the screws E E, as shown in iig. 4. The 'packing F may be made of a series of rings, of metal, leather, or India rubber, and pressed out against the 'cylinder by the sectors G G, of which there maybe `u proper or` convenient number, according to the size of thepis'ton. These sectors G are made with openings in them, for the lugs C and screws- E, shown in section, and the lugs and openings in iig. 2. To force out the sectors, I make a cylindricalnut, y H, with a conical end, as shown in iig. 4, with a female screw in it, iittedto'a male screw` on the piston-rod, and.
a male screw on the outside of`the nut, fitted to a` female screw in the -lower plate, D, all as shown in iig. 4. The corners of the sectors G are countcrsunk or' bevelled oii, to correspond with the conical end of the nut H, so that, as the nut is screwed in by the lugs I I, the sectors are forced out by the cone, to tighten the packing against the cylinder and the packing may be tightened without taking oi either cylinderhcad,'if the cylinderi head next to the screw is provided with lugs on the inside corresponding withthe lugs I on the nut H, so that the link of the piston-rod can be unhoolred from4 the crank, and the nut pushed against the cylinderf head, and the piston turned by the link, to screw in nut H, which will be held from turning by the-lugs on the cylinder-head.
Figure 5 shows a plan of the lugs K K, which may be cast on the cylinder-head, to prevent the nut II from turning when the piston 4is turned; or, the lugs may b el made in a separateblock, as shown in Figure 6, and.
The nut II may be made with a screw-thread on the inside only, or"4 on the outside only, if preferred that Way.
In combination with the piston-head A, fastened to the piston-rod, I claimy The conical nut H, constructed witha female screw on the inside, to iit the piston-rod, and a mule screw on the outside, to fit the piston-head, in combination with the piston-head and rod, as described.
In combination with the conical nut H, provided with lugs I I, I claim the corresponding lugs ou the head ofthe cylinder.
