Description
Improved ADJ U STAB L E Hollow Plunger I PUMP For l 'nve who)" Witnesses UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN SPARKS, OF ROUSEVILLE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO ALLEN B. KLNGSLAND AND WILLIAM H. EDDY, OF TITUSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PETROLEUM-PUMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,496, dated August 29, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN SPARKS, of Rouseville, Venango county and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Adjustable Hollow Plunger-Pump for Artesian Wells, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, of which- Figurel is an exterior view, Fig. 2 a longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 a perspective view of the clutch F when open.
My invention relates to that class of pumps which is used at the bottom of artesian wells, having an upper and a lower or standing-valve.
The object of the invention is to construct a pump of this kind which will perform an equal amount of Work with those now in use, and at the same time be free from the necessity of constantly drawing up for adjustment or repair. For this purpose the barrel A of the pump is fitted with the long hollow plunger B, having upon its upper'end the ball-valve D, connecting with the pump-rod S. The lower edge of the ball-valve D terminates in the teeth 6 e, which fit into corresponding teeth 6 e on the upper edge of the cylinder H, forming, when closed, the clutch 1?. The upper end of the barrel A is/ also turned out with athread and a shoulder, K, to receive the cylinder H and the packing R. The lower or standing-valve G, instead of being packed or wedged into the end of the pump in the usual manner, is furnished-with the extension ing of the well T in the ordinary manner by the threads I) Z).
The action of the pump is performed by the upper and lower valves D and G, and the hollow plunger B in the usual manner. Should it be desired to tighten the packing R of the pump while it is in the well, the pump-rods and upper valve D are lowered and turned until the teeth c c and e e on the lower edge of the ball-valve and on the upper edge of the cylinder H fit and catch, andthus allow the cylinderHto be screwed down upon the packing R.
I do not claim the ball-valves D and G, nor the hollow plunger B.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The cylinder H and clutch I*,'in combination with the barrel A, packing R, and plunger B, as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
2. The cylinder H, clutch F, and packing R, in combination with the cylinder A, plunger B, and valves D Gr, as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
JOHN SPARKS.
