' Be it known that I, PAUL T. HAHN, a citizen of the United States, residing 'at Woodcliifon-Hudson, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing Devices, of

which the following'is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to devices; or means for printing on wrapping-paper; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is designed for use in connection with a rollof wrapping-paper from which strips or sections of paper may be drawn for use in the usual manner, a further object being to provide a device ofv the class specified for use in retail stores and similar places where wrapping-paper is usually kept in rolls and by means of which any desired advertisement may be printed on separate strips or sections of the paper as they are drawn from and detached from the roll.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Flgure 1 1s a sectional end view of a device or apparatus involving my invention; Fig.

2, a sectional plan view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, a section side view of a detail of the construction, the section being on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.

Mounted in the opposite sides of the main roller 6 is a type-roller f, which is of the ordinary spring-roller type and which is provided at one or both ends with a radial pin f which is adapted to strike against a corresponding lug or pin f secured in one or both of the arms 0Z of the main frame OZ and by means of which the spring type-roller f is normally held in the position shown in Fig. l, andthe type on said roller are placed on the top portion thereof, as clearly indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, and said type-roller is provided near its opposite ends with annular beads or collars f, which bear on the paperroll a when the type-roller is in position for use.

Within the rear portion of the main frame (Z is pivoted a supplemental frame 9, composed of side arms g and a rear or back crossbar 9 and the side arms, 9 of the supplemental frame 9 are pivoted over the typeroller f, as shown at g".

are all mounted in the supplemental frame, and secured at one or both sides of the main frame is a spring or springs c, which operate in connection with lugs or pins d on the inner sides of the side arms g of the supplemental frame to normally hold the supplemental frame in the position shown in Fig. 1, in which the supplemental inking-roller 71 is out of contact with the type-roller f.

The springs e serve to force the blottingroller 0 downwardly and normally hold it in contact with the roll a of wrapping-paper, and said springs also normally serve to hold the main frame rZ in the position shown in Fig.

Connected with the rear or back portion of the supplemental frame g or with the crossbar thereof is a handle by which said supplemental frame may be depressed, and the downward movement of the supplemental frame g is limited by pins or lugs 7f secured to the side arms (Z of the main frame (Z, and

by applying spring-pressure to the handle j the supplmental frame will be forced downwardly until it strikes the lugs or pins k, and then both the main and supplemental frames may be forced downwardly until the typeroller f strikes the roll a of wrapping-paper.

The ink holder or reservoir is provided with a removable or hinged cover if, having a handle it and the operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof. The end a of the roll a of wrappingpaper normally projects beneath the head 0, and whenever it is desired to tear off a piece of this paper the same may be done in the usual manner and without printing thereon, if desired. \Vhenever it is desired to print an advertisement on the strip of paper torn off, one hand is placed on the handlej of the supplemental frame 9, and said frame is depressed until the supplemental inking roller 7b is brought in contact with the type-roller f, and both of the frames cl and g are then depressed until the type-roller f or the beads or collars f thereon come in contact with the roll a of The end a is then pulled through or beneath the head 0, and the desired ad vertisement is printed on the paper, and said end a is pulled farther through or beneath the head 0, and the strip or section of paper with the advertisement thereon is cut off or pulled off in the usual manner.

My invention is in no way limited to the method of or means for connecting the type with the roller f, and such type may be formed on or connected with said roller in any desired manner, and said roller may thus be provided with any preferred form of advertisement.

In the above-described operation of printing an advertisement on the paper as it is drawn from the roll a the type'roller f turns through approximately a complete revolution, and when pressure is removed from the handle j the various parts of the printing apparatus resume the position shown in Fig. 1, the type-rollerf is raised out of contact with the paper-roll a, and the supplemental inkingroller If is raised out of contact with the typeroller f.

In the normal position of the parts shown in Fig. 1 the main inking-roller 71, is held against the pad 762 in the bottom of the ink holder or reservoir It, but when the supplemental frame 9 is depressed, as hereinbefore described, the connection of the main inkingroller 71/ with the pad 71) is broken.

The roller it serves to spread the ink on the main inking roller h, and the supple mental inking-roller 75 receives the ink from said main inking-roller. The blotting-roller e rests at all times on the paper-roll and serves to dry the ink of the advertisement after the latter has been printed on the paper, as hereinbefore described.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In an apparatus of the class described, a frame adapted to receive a roll of paper, a vertically-movable cross-head mounted in said frame and adapted to rest on the roll of paper and provided with a front cutting edge, a main frame pivoted to the rear side of said crosshead, a spring depressed blotting roller mounted in said main frame and resting normally on the roll of paper when the latter is in position, a type-roller mounted in the main frame below the blotting-roller and normally held out of contact with the paper-roll, a supplemental frame mounted in the main frame rearwardly of the blotting-roller, an in k-reservoir supported on the main frame above the supplemental frame, means for feeding ink through the bottom of said reservoir, a main inking-roller mounted in the supplemental frame beneath the bottom of the ink-reservoir and normally held in contact therewith, and a supplemental inking-roller mounted in the supplemental frame beneath the main inkingroller and normally held out of contact with the type-roller, said supplemental frame being spring-supported,said supplemental frame being adapted to be depressed in the main frame so as to bring the supplemental inkingroller into contact with the type-roller and both of said frames being adapted to be depressed so as to bring the type-roller into contact with the paper-roll, substantially as shown and described.

2. In an apparatus of the class described, a frame adapted to receive a roll of paper, a vertically-movable cross-head mounted in said frame and adapted to rest on said roll of paper when the latteris in position, a main frame pivoted to one side of said cross-head, a supplemental frame pivoted in the main frame, a

spring-depressed blotting-roller mounted in the front portion of the main frame and adapted to normally bear on the paper-roll, the springs which depress the blotting-roller also serving to hold the main frame in a raised position, springs for holding the' supplemental frame in a raised position, a type-roller mounted in the main frame rearwardly of the blotting-roller and normally held out of contact with the paper-roll, an ink-reservoir secured in the main frame above the supplemental frame, means for feeding ink through the bottom of the ink-reservoir,inking-rollers mounted in the supplemental frame between the inkreservoir and the type-roller, said inking-rollers being in contact and one of them being normally held in contact with the bottom of the ink-reservoir and the other normally held out of contact with the type-roller and means whereby the supplemental frame may be depressed in the mainframe and both frames depressed, substantially as shown and described.

3. In an apparatus of the class described, a paper-roll holder provided with a verticallymovable cross-head adapted to normally rest on the paper-roll, a vertically-movable main frame pivoted to said cross-head, a supplemental and vertically-movable frame pivoted in the main frame, a blotter-roller mounted in the main frame, a type-roller mounted in the main frame rearwardly of the blotterroller, an ink-reservoir secured in the main frame above the supplemental frame and inking-rollers mounted in the supplemental frame between the ink-reservoir and the typeroller, substantially as shown and described.

4. In an apparatus of the class described, a paper-roll holder provided with a verticallymovable cross-head adapted to normally rest on the paper-roll, a vertically-movable main frame pivoted to said cross-head, a supple mental and vertically-movable frame pivoted in the main frame, a blotting-roller mounted in the main frame, a type roller mounted in the main frame rearwardly of the bottom roller, an ink-reservoir secured in the main frame above the supplemental frame, and inkiIlgJOllGI'S mounted in the supplemental frame between the ink-reservoir and the type-roller, said supplemental frame being also provided With an ink-spreading roller which bears on one of the inking rollers, substantially as shown and described. I

5. In an apparatus of the class described, a frame adapted to receive a roll of paper and provided with avertically-movable cross'head adapted to rest on said roll, a main frame pivoted to the cross-head, a blotting-roller mounted in the main frame, a spring-actuated typeroller mounted in the main frame below the blotting-roller, and means for supplying ink to the type-roller, and springs for supporting the main frame and depressing the blottingroller, substantially as shown and described.

6. In an apparatus of the class described, a-

frame adapted to receive a 'roll of paper, a cross-head mounted in said frame and adapted to bear on the roll of paper, a frame pivoted' frame and adapted to bear on a roll of paper when said frame is depressed, means for supplying ink to said type-roller, substantially as shown and described.

7. In an apparatus of the class described, a frame adapted to support a roll of paper, a. vertically-movable cross-head mounted therein and adapted to rest on said roll of paper, and a frame pivoted to said cross-head and provided with means for printing an advertisement on said roll of paper, substantially as shown and described.

8. In an apparatus of the class described, a frame provided with a vertically movable cross-head adapted to rest on a roll of paper mounted in said frame, a frame pivoted to said cross-head, a spring-depressed blottingroller mounted in said frame and adapted to .mounted in said frame below the blottingroller and adapted to be brought in contact with the roll of paper when said frame is depressed and means for supplying ink to the type-roller, substantially as shown and described.

' 9. In an apparatus of the class described, a frame adapted to support a roll of paper, a vertically-movable cross-head mounted in said frame over the roll of paper, and a rearwardlyextending printing-frame pivoted to said vertically-movable cross-head and adapted to swing in a yertical plane and to be supported by said roll of paper, said printing-frame being provided with means for printing an advertisement on the paper of said roll, substan tially as shownand described.
