Be it known that I, THEOPHILUS W. ALnX- AND me, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burlington, in the county of Des Moines and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dispensing-Cans and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in dispensing-cans of that class in which the liquid is designed to be forced out of the can by the pressure of air which is pumped into the liq uid-ch amber.
The object of my invention is to promote the convenience of the operator in using my device.
Heretofore the valve in the air-pressureconveying tube has been so placed that it is practically inaccessible to the operator when it becomes stuck in one position or is otherwise out of order. This has been the great source of complaint by users of pumpingcans.
My invention consists in arranging the airpressure-conveying tube and its valve so that said valve will be located just below the cap for the filling-nozzle, where it can be readily gotten at to loosen the valve when it becomes stuck in its seat.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a can embodying my invention with the cap removed for the filling-nozzle, and Fig. 2 is a vertical and central section view on the line w of Fig. 1 with the cap in place.
Referring more particularly to the drawings. 1 is an oil-can or other suitable vessel; 2, the top; 3, the pump, and 4: a dischargetube having a removable discharge-nozzle 5, similar to that shown in my Patent No. 547,477. The air-pressure-conveying tube 6 leads from the lower end of the pump-chamber, preferably obliquely, and terminates just below the cap to the filling-nozzle and above the top of the can, where it is anchored in any suitable manner to the top of the can. A valve 7, similar to that shown in my Patent No. 663,712, is arranged at the upper end of said air-pressure-conveying tube, so that it is located immediately below the screw-cap 8 of the filling-nozzle 9. The pump is provided with a piston 10, carried by a rod 11, having a handle 12. A port 13 leads from the pumpchamber into the air-pressure-conveyi ng tube. An opening 14: in the top of the can is provided with a stopper 15. By withdrawing the stopper the air-pressure upon the liquid is at once removed, and the discharge of the liquid is thereby immediately stopped.
I do not limit myself to the specific form of valve shown herein, as other forms may be used instead and the spirit of my invention remain intact and be protected. I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall Within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character described, a pump-chamber, a filling-nozzle, a cap for said nozzle, an air-pressure-conveying tube lead ing from said pump-chamber into said fillingnozzle, a valve arranged within the upper end of said tube, said tube extending above the top of the can thereby giving ready access to said valve.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a can consisting of a body portion, a top having four openings, one for the pump, one for a vent, one for delivery, and one for filling, located near the edge of the can and receiving the end of the air-pressure-conveying tube extending obliquely from the pump into said filling-opening.
