Letters Patent N 17,991, dated May 19, 1868.
IMPRQYEMENT .IN GAUGES.
tit: 5min: who it in than 21m mint ant mining gm. at tin 5mm.
TO ALL WHOM ITMAY CONCERN;
Be it known that: I, E. W. MATHEWSON, 0g Norwich, in the county of New London, and in the Stateof Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gauges; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact-description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon.
invention'is designed for use by machinists, or other mechanics, and consists in so arranginga scratchawl, with a smooth and level base, that the height or elevation desired may be marked upon the sideof a regular or irregular face or surface,jwhen the same is placed in a vertical or angular position. a i
In the annexed drawings, making a part of this-specification, A represents a suitable base, made of hard metal, and perfectly true and smooth on the bottom thereof, and B represents a metallic plate, secured ina vertical position to said'base. i
The-plateB is provided with a slot, X, as shown, in which fits and works a suitable shaft, through which the scratch-owl or bar 0 passes.
Upon the shaft, above described, are plates or flanges, D and H, one on each side of the plate B, as shown.
The plate or flange D fits loosely over said shaft, and H is rigidly secured thereto, and is concave across its periphery, and provided with teeth or cogs, which mesh with the screw-thread of the shaft F.
The shaft F has bearings, nearits opposite ends, and is situated hy the side of and parallel'with the plate B, and so as to mesh with and operate the wheel or plate H, and thereby the scratch-awl C. i
The scratch-bar crawl C is made of any suitable dimensions, and inserted into and through one eml of its shaft, and is bent-at one end, as shown.
It will'be seen that by turning the screw-shaft F, the point of the scratch-awl maybeelevated or depressed, as may be desired, without any trouble, and by withdrawing saidawl nearly out to the point, and turning it, into avertical position, the beut point will form a gauge for'points higher than could. otherwise he obtained by this device, or one of equal size. V
This scratch-awl 0 may be tightened in its socket in any suitable manner, and its shaft may be adjusted up or down inthe slot Xin any convenient way. i
Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The slotted support A B, in combination with the shaft, worm-wheel H, screw F, and pointer 0, arranged and operating substantially asset forth. m x
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this lflthdayof March, 1868.
i i E. W. MATHEWSON.
