CONN ECTlNG-HEAD FOR HAY-ELEVATORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 779,972, dated January 10, 1905.
Application filed May 9, 1904. Serial No. 207,088-

Be it known that we, DAVID E. ROWLAND "1 PETER BAGHER, citizens of the United ates, residing at Canton, in the county of .ark and State of Ohio, have invented cerinew and useful Improvements in Connect- .g-Heads for Hay-Elevators; and we do heredeclare that the following is a full, clear,
l exact description of the same, reference lng had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, and to the numerof reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a view showing one member of e elevating-head and illustrating the pulley roperly arranged with reference thereto, also lowing the suspending-hook properly located -vith reference to the head. Fig. 2 is a hori- .ontal section on line 2 2, Fig. 1, looking toward the top of the sheet.
The present invention has relation to connecting-heads for hay-elevators; and it con- :ists in the novel arrangement hereinafter decribed, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 represents one member of thehead which constitutes onehalf of the head proper, and of course the two members are to be properly bolted together, so as to provide suitable bearing-points for the pulley-axle 2, upon which the pulley 3 is mounted in the usual manner. The lower portions of the head members are provided with the recesses 4:, which recesses constitute a round recess when placed together to receive the head 5, formed upon the upper end of the hook 6. For the purpose of holding the hook 6 in proper relative position with reference to the head members 1 the flange 7 is provided, which flange abuts against the bottom ends of the head members 1 and the head 5, properly seated in the round recess 4:. The upper end of the hook is provided with the chamber 8 and in which chamber is located the spring 9. To the hook portion 6 is pivotally attached the tongue 10, which tongue is provided with the inward-extending arm 11, said inward-extending arm being so arranged that one end of the spring 9 will abut or press against said arm and hold the tongue 10 in the position illustrated in Fig. 1, which is its normal position. It will be understood that when the tongue 10 is pressed inward the spring will be compressed, and when said tongue will be released it will assume its normal position and close the hook 6, thereby preventing any accidental displacement of the parts of the connecting-head of a hay-carrier.
It will be understood that in attaching the different devices, such as hay-forks or slingsections, considerable room must be provided and the tongue must be permitted to turn a considerable distance upon its pivotal point and at the same time be forced into and held in its normal position. This object we accomplish by providing the arm 11 and the spring and placing the spring some distance from the pivotal point of the tongue and locating the arm so that the spring will press or bear against said arm at all times and under all circumstances. I
It will be understood that any rotary movement of the hook 6 will not displace the tongue nor permit any disengagement of the parts connected to the hook regardless of the position of the head proper or the hook 6. It is well understood that in hay-elevators the elevating or connecting head is swung more or less by the swinging of the load and has a tendency to disconnect the load from the hook; but by our peculiar arrangement this object is overcome, and at the same time the throat of the hook can be formed of such a size that the diflerentparts can be easily connected and without danger of disconnecting the parts.
The tongue 10 is pivoted at such a point that the inward-extending arm 11 will not pass the lower end of the spring 9; but said spring will be compressed by the inward movement of said tongue, and at the same time the normal action of said spring will always be such that the tongue 10 will be forced into the position illustrated in Fig. 1. The inner projection 11 is rounded, so that it will have an eccentric movement with reference to the spring, thereby compressing the spring and allowing the tongue to have an extended throw, as illustrated by the positions shown in the dotted lines, Fig. 1, and without dis engagement from the spring at any point during the movement of said tongue.
Having fully described our invention, what We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a head, a hook swiveled thereto, said hook provided with a spring located in axial alinement with the swiveled hook, and a tongue provided With an arm adapted to engage the spring, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of a head, a hook swiveled thereto, said hook provided with a spring located in axial alinement with the hook, and
a tongue provided with an arm or eccentric portion adapted to engage the spring regardless of the position of the tongue, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

It is hereby certified that Letters Patent No. 779,972, granted January 10, 1905, upon the application of David E. Rowland and Peter Bacher, of Canton, Ohio, for an improvement in Connecting-Heads For Hay-Elevators, was erroneously issued to said David E. Rowland and Peter Bacher as owners of said invention; whereas the said Letters Patent should have been issued to The Ney lifamgaot'uring Company,
of Canton, 0/750, a corporation of Ohio, as owner of the entire interest in said invention, as shown by the assignments of record in this office; and that the said Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein that the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Offiee.
