ATTACHMENT FOR PRINTING-PRESSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 779,367, dated January 3, 1905. Application filed Tune 10, 1903. Serial No. 160,893.

Be it known that I, SAMUEL R. KRAMER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Perlasie, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Attachments for Printing- Presses, of .which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in the detail construction of auxiliary mechanism for attachment to printing-presses; and it more particularly consists in an improved winding device for controlling the passage of a continuous web of paper to or from a roll upon which the same is wound,the main object of the invention being to provide a structure which while tending continuously to wind up or draw out a web of paper shall be so designed that the web will be acted upon only when a predetermined amount of it has accumulated at a given point.
A further object of the invention is to provide 'easily-adjustable means for maintaining any desired degree of tension upon a web of paper or similar material.
These objects I secure as hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which-' Figure l is aside elevation showing the preferredform of my improved winding or feedcontrolling apparatus. Fig. 2- is a plan view of the device, showing the arrangement of rollers and also illustrating the preferred construction of adjustable clutch; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation on the line 3 3, Fig. 2, showing an improved means for keeping the printed surface ofthe web of paper out of contact with certain of the rollers.
In the abovedrawings, A and A are a pair of frames suitably held together by a series of tie-bolts and provided with bearings for the support of rollers, of which two are shown at a and a2. A shaft a3 is carried on what is in the present instance the highest portion of the frames A, and said shaft has carried loosely on it a pulley a4, placed to receive a belt a5, connected to a source of power, which belt is omitted from Fig. 2 for the sake of clearness. To this pulley is fixed a conical section and there are bearing upon said section shoes 7)', pivotally carried on bars b2,
which in turn are pivotally supported by a' cross-piece Z13, fixed to the shaft a3. In Fig. 2 it will be noted that the bars b2 extend beyond the points of their attachment to the cross-bar b3 and rest upon the conical surface of the adjustable piece J, which piece is threaded upon an extended portion of the shaft c3, so that it may be moved from the cross-bar b3, and thereby force farther apart the adjacent ends of the bars b2, thereby causing the opposite ends of said bars to press the shoes b upon the conical section g Upon the shaft a3 is wound a web of paper, (indicated at 0,) the same forming a roll C, which in the particular device illustrated is so operated as to wind up or have added to it the said web. This extends from the roll C between the two rollers a' and a2 to and between the other rollers o3 and CZ', and I preferably carry both of said pairs of rollers in bearings formed in the frames A in such manner that the upper one of each pair is free to rise or fall in its bearings. Upon an extension of the supporting-shaft of the roller d is fixed a toothed wheel d2. I
Pivoted to onel of the frames A at c is a lever E, having at its end a pair of arms e' and e2, and the upper of said arms is so formed as to come into the path of and engage with the teeth of the wheel d2'. The second arm. e2, which is at the end of the lever E, has projecting from it two pins e3 and while the opposite end of said lever is provided with an extension upon which is adjustably carrieda weight e5.
While the roll (Z3 is carried in fixed bearings in the 'frames A, the bearing UZ* is carried by a pair of arms d5, one of which, as shown in Fig. l, extends between two pins or projections 03 and o, projecting .from the arm e2 of the lever E.
In order that the web of paper c shall not have its printed surfacel brought in contact with the faces of the rolls over which it passes,

which pass around the roller a/ and over the roller a2, down to and around the roller b, thereby preventing the rollers Z and d and a and a2, respectively, from approaching nearer one another than the thickness of said band. IOO
In operation a pair of bands are so placed upon the above-mentioned rollers as to hear upon the extreme margins or edges of the web of paper, thereby preventing the printed 5 portion of said web from coming in contact with the rolls d and a.
It is to be understood that in the form of printing-press to which my winding device is designed to be attached the web o is fed in- IO termittently, and with the various parts of the apparatus in the positions indicated in Fig.
1 the belt a5 continuously turns the pulley L3 through the medium of the shoes and Z22 and cross-arms 723, said pulley consequently exert- T5 ing a force upon the shaft as, whereby the web c is constantly under a tension, which may be regulated by means vof the adjustable conical nut b. The result of this construction .and operation is that as soon as there is any slack in the paper web c this will be immediately taken up upon the roll C. As soon as the web is fed forward in the direction of the arrow in Fig. l the roller d* immediately falls and one of its supporting-arms (Z5 comes in 25 contact with the pin e. As said roller is of appreciable weight, the result of such action is to move the lever E upon its pivot e, thus also moving the arm e' of said lever out of vengagement with the teeth on the wheel d2.'
Said wheel and the roller (Z arenow free to rotate and the web c is wound upon the roller C until sulcient of the slack in said web has been taken up to raise the roller d* high enough to bring the arm d5 into contact with the pin or projection e", and thereby again turn the lever E upon its pivot, so as to bring the end of the arm e' into engagement with the teeth on thewheel d. Further take up of the web c is now prevented until the roller dfhas 40 again dropped far enough to engage and move the lever E through the medium of the projection or pin e.
The Weight e5 is adjustably carried upon one of the arms of the lever'E so as to properly balance the weight of the other arms and projections, it being desired that the lever as a whole shall be so balanced upon its pivot as to remain in any given position without inherent tendency to move. I preferably provide an idler-pulley fwhereby any tightness of the bands f may be varied, this pulley being supported upon a shaft g', which is carried in bearings' on armsgz, adjustably clamped to the frame of the machine. 1 similarly provide an idler-pulley a7, carried upon an arm as, to regulate`the tightness of the belt a5. I claim as my invention- 1. A device for controlling the amount of slack in a web of material, the same consisting of an arm, a piece carried thereby and' BEST AVAlLABLE CGD placed to be acted on by the arm and connecting said arm and the web-holding means, substantially as described.
2. The combinationloic a device for exerting tension upon a web of material, means for preventing feeding of said web to said tensionexerting device, said preventing means including a device for locking or releasing the web, a piece held in a loop of the web, means connecting said piece with the locking and releasing device so as to permit feeding of the web when the loop therein is of relatively great length and to prevent said feed after said loop has been shortened by a predetermined amount, substantially as described` 3. The combination of a device for exerting tension on a web of material, a roller controlling the feeding of the web, a piece extending in a loop of the .web and free to rise and fall, and means connecting the piece with the feedcontrolling roller in such manner that after said piece has been lifted to a predetermined arm is in one position and permitted to turn when the arm is in another position, substantially as described.
5. The combination of a device for exerting tension upon a web of material, a roller having operatively connected to ita toothed wheel, an arm carrying a piece in engagement with the web and a pivoted bar having portions for engagement by said arm at two points in its path of motion, said barbeing placed to engage the toothed wheel, substantially as described.
6. The combination of a supporting-standard, a device for exerting tension upon a web of material, a roller carried in bearings on said standard, an arm pivoted to the standard and carrying a second roller in contact with the web of material and a bar acted upon by said pivoted arm at two points in the path of motion of said arm, with a device actuated by said bar to allow or prevent motion of said roller, substantially as described.
7. The combination of a pulley connected to a source of power, a spindle operatively coun,- uected to a web of material, means connecting said spindle and the pulley, whereby the tension put upon said web of material may be varied, a roller in engagement with saidweb of material having means for resisting the tension put upon the web, and a device releasing or locking said roller and constructed to be IOO 779,367 BESTAVAILABLECGP.. a
operated by variations in the amountof Web fed from said supply device, substantially as described.
8. rl`he combination of a device for exerting tension upon a web of material, a frame for carrying the same, a pair of rollers engaging said web, a pair of feed-rollers beyond said guide-rollers, means for controlling the action of said feedrollers, said means includinga device, operated by variations in the quantity of web supplied to the feed-rollers, for locking or releasing said rollers, substantially as .described.
9. A device for controlling the amount of slack in a Web of material, the same including a piece having means whereby it is supported so as to be in contact with the web, mechanism constantly tending to move the web, means for positively holding said web to prevent it from moving under the action of said mechanism and a device connecting said holding means and the piece in contact with the web, substantially as described.
