To all whom it ma concern:
Be it lmown t at I, Ionaoro LAzAeA, a citizen of the Republic of Cuba, and a resident of Salem, in the county of Roanoke and 65 State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in -Web-Feeding.
Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in w a web feeding device and is intended particularly for u'sein a machine for packaging articles, such for exam le as shown in my application Serial Numl ier 267,511, filed December 19, 1918, of which this application 1 is a division.

The invention relates to a machine for carrying out the foregoing object, and said machine, in its preferable, though not necessary, embodiment will now behereinafter described and claimed.

Referring now to the details of the drawings by numerals: l designates part of the frame of, a machine havin uprights or standards on opposite sides thereof, such as that shown at 2 in Figure 1 and in dotted lines in Figure 2. 1
Each standard is formed with a vertical channel or groove 4 into which fit uprights 6 and 7, the lower ends of which are supported by a-.roller 8 and the upper ends of each are notched to support a reel 10 of tin- 'foil or other material to'be fed; Said lower roller 8 rests upon and is supperted'by a feed roller 12 driven by bevel gearing 13 and 14 from a shaft 16 to which power may be applied in any desirablemanner.
The foil or other material from the reel 10 passes downwardly asshown between the two rolls 8 and 12, the lower of which is constantly driven, so that there is a constant feed given to the'foil from the reel 10. In order to provide tension upon the foil and keep it taut. a weighted friction device 18 i used as shown. Inasmuch as the whole weight of the heavy foil reel 10 is carried by the uprights 6 and 7, it follows that all the weight of the foil is carried by the roller 8. When said reel is full, more friction must be exerted between the rollers 8 and 12 to feed the foil than when said reel is smaller and lighter, and by suspending the weight of the reel upon the upper roller 8, the friction is entirely governed by the weight of the foil, so that as the foil is reduced and less friction is needed, there is less weight to cause pressure between said rollers 8 and 12. While the weight of the reel is, when in use, supported by the, uprights 6 and 7 and their roller 8, the standards 2 are each provided with a recess 22 into which each trunnion of the reel 10 may be placed when the machine is being provided with a new reel and it is necessary to thread the foil through the rollers 8 and 12 and forward I to the place where it is to be used.
From the foregoing and accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have invented a web feeding device capable of feeding the most delicate material in such a manner that it cannot be injured owing to the fact that the pull on the delicate material isautomatically governed by the weight of the material.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a wrapping machine, the combination of a reel, a pair of feed rollers under said reel, the strip from the reel passing downwardly therefrom and between said feed rollers, and said reel having its weight carried by the upper of said feed rollers.
2. In a wrapping machine, the combination of a reel, a pair of feed rollers under. said reel, the strip from the reel passing downwardly therefrom and between said feed rollers, said reel normally having its weight carried by the upper of said feed rollers, and an auxiliary support for said reel arranged to support the reel and relieve-the feed rollers of the weight of thereel.
3. In a wrapping machine, the combination of a reel, a pair of feed rollers under said reel, the strip from the reel phssin downwardly therefrom and between sai feed rollers, and uprights carried by the u per of said feed rollers and supporting t c said reel.
4. In a wrapping machine the combination of a reel, :1 p ir of fee rol ers n er a reel, a pair said reel, the strip from the reel passing downwardly therefrom and between said feed rollers, uprights carried by the upper of said feed rollers and supporting the said reel, and an auxiliary support, the reel being adapted to be moved from said uprights to said auxiliary support, whereby the weight of .the reel is taken from said rollers.
5. In a wrapping machine, the combination of a frame havin an auxiliary support, of fee rollers supported by said frame, uprights supported by the upper feed roller, and normally supporting said reel, the reel being adapted to be taken 0d of said uprights and placed in said auxiliary support.
6. In a wrapping machine, the combination of a frame having a pair of vertical recesses therein, a pair of feed rollers, a pair of uprights supported by the upper feed roller and located in the aforesaid recesses,
and a reel supported by said uprights, whereby the weight of the reel is carried by the upper feed roller.
7 In a wrapping machine, the combination of a frame having apair of vertical recesses therein, a pair of feed rollers, a pair of uprights supported by the upper feed roller and located in the aforesaid recesses, and a reel supported by said uprights, whereby the weight of the reel is carried by the upper feed roller, said frame having an auxiliary support adapted to have the reel placed therein so as to take the weight of the reel oil of the upper feed roller.
