Be it known that I, ALFBE) G. SMITH, of Marathon, inthe county of Cortland, and Stute of New York, have invented a new and improved Method ofFoxing or Fronting and `Soling Boots," 8m.; and I do hereby` declare that the following is a' full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming'n part of thisspeeipp` cation, in whichl p Figure 1 is a. sectional view of my invention,

Theimethold of foxingboots heretoforehas been to construct the faxing directly upon theboot to which-it is to be applied. Y i 4 i p My improvement consists in constructing foxings separately from the boot, and ttingrthem theretoa-fter i they are4 completed, which gives certain advantages over the old method, as hereinafter explained.

I construct my foxngs A over a. lash/and give thernnsoleLB b, so that the old work to which they are applied is foxed and soled at the same time. A rubber band, e, fig. 1, is secured linside ofthe faxing at the instep, so that a tghtjoint is formed between its rcar'edge and the old work. The sole of the foxing is provided with several short screws d, for securing it to the boot. In applying it to a boot (or shoe,) the undersol'e ofthe boot is removed, and the faxing A is then slipped on, and secured in place by the screws d. The foxing maybe A secured by peggng, if desired, but the'screws' d are all Vthat ,are necessary.

' The advantages of this method are, the foxngs can bem-.ide with ,le-ss labor .over a last than they can on oldwork, and can also be made more true and perfect. Another advantage is, that they can be manufctured by the quantity, of different sizes', and kept on sale by the triade,l'the 'same as boots or shoes, and, when wanted, can be quickly furnished and fitted.

What I claim as my invention, Vand desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

As an improved articleof manufacture, a foxing or fronting and soling for boots and shoes, constructed separately frouthe work to which it is lto be applied, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
