SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 779,151, dated January 3, 1905.
Application filed November 28, 1903. Serial No. 183,081.
To all whom, it may concern: 7 Be it known that I, LEVIN FAUsT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the class of locks commonly known in the lock trade as mor- IO tise-locks. Its object is the production of a strong serviceable lock of the simplest and compactest construction possible; and it consists of certain new and useful features of construction and combinations of parts especially 5 devised to those ends, all as hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is an isometrical detailed view of all the parts of a complete lock embodying my invention with the portions composing its supporting-base separated for the purpose of showing the interior construction and arrangement 5 thereof. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same with the two parts of the supporting-base placed and secured together. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the lock and its key. Figs. land 5 are isometrical detailed 3 views for illustrating the operation of the lock-bolt. Fig. 6 is a like view of the lockbolt. Fig. 7 is also a like view of a key for operating the same.

C is a bifurcated slidable bolt mounted in the slideway B in the supporting-base and having each rearwardly-extending furcation C and C thereof transversely offset at C C,
respectively, to form a pair of shoulders there- 5 on, one pair, O, for engagement of a key therewith and the other pair, C, for limiting the travel of such bolt C. The employment of the offsets O C*, extending the full width of the furcations C O adapts their bolt Cto be engaged and operated bya relatively long key-bit, which will give a long positive throw to such bolt C with little rotary movement of the key-stem, a desirable result notheretofore attained in locks of small transverse diameter.
D is a pin seated in and transversely to the part B of the lock-supporting base.
E is akey provided with abit E and adapted by the cleft E therein to bestride the offset portions C O* of the bolt C and engage the 5 shoulders C on the bifurcation C thereof and therethrough operate such bolt C. The key E is also provided with a pipe portion E adapted to admit and turn upon the pin D.
F is a postpassed transversely through the 7 lugs A B on the parts A B to secure them firmly together.
The form of the bolt C is such that the inner and adjacent edges of its furcations O O frictionally contact the post F and therewith 7 5 serve in lieu of a spring to control such bolt C.
Figs. 4 and 5 clearly indicate the limits of travel or throw of the bolt C when acted upon by its key E.
What 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a lock, the combination of a supporting-base with a sliding bolt provided with a bifurcated rear extension, one furcation of said extension offset to form a pair of key-en- 5 gaging shoulders, said shoulders extending the full width of the furcation, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a lock, in combination, a supportingbase, having a bolt-slideway therein, and a bi- 9 furcated bolt mounted in such slideway' haw ing each furcation thereof transversely offset to form a pair of shoulders thereon, one pair for the engagement of a key therewith and the other pair for limiting the travel thereof,
