Be it known that L AxnLF. LARsoN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rollers for Piano-Playing Attachments, of which the following is a specification. n i
The present invention relates to an adjustable roller for piano-playing attachments or other musical instruments in which perforated sheets of lpaper are employed forv actuating the instrument, the object being tojprovide means vfor readily adjusting the roller longi- This and other novel features of construction are illustrated in the accompanying drawings and will hereinafter be fully described.

In illustrating my invention I have only shown such parts as are immediately related to the roller. The device consists principally of a roller for winding or feeding the paper, bearings for the roller, and means for adjusting it longitudinally. These features are set forth in the following description.

shown, consists of a central spindle b, pro- Kvided at its ends with disks b', and situated on. the ends axially are small recesses 52 and b3, the recess b2 being square or of key shape, so that the roller may be turned when asmall shaft is inserted therein, while the recess b3 is rounded, so as to permit the roller to turn freely on a stud inserted therein.
Cis a plunger provided on itsend next the roller with a stud c, which is adapted to engage the recess'bs in roller and forms a trunnion for the roller. The plunger C is movable in a tubular casing c. This casing is held in a fixed position on framework of the c3, whichengages a screw-threaded part a2 on said casing. j

[D is a head provided at one end with a short central shaft or stud d, which is adapted to engage the recess b on the end of the roller B. E is a drive-shaft provided on its inner kend with a slot e, so as to form a forked end e', which engages the pins d 1 in the bore da and D. This drive-shaft may have bearings of any suitable description in the framework of the instrument, and, as shown, these consist of a collar e2, mounted in-a flanged bushing e, attached to the framework A, 0n the shaft E is mounted a collar e* and a drive-wheel E', secured in place by a nut e5." The parts e2, et, and E' have grooves c and ball-bearings e7.
F is a lever for moving the head D longitudinally. This lever is pivoted atf to a bracket f lts lower end is forked at f1 and engages the-'pins d `on the collar (Z6, so as to move the head. The upper part of the lever has a screwthreaded bore f2, and f3 is a screw-threaded rodv which passes through and engages the same, so as to oscillate or move the lever to a certain extent on its pivot. The rod f 3 is provided on its outer end with a turning disk or wheel f4, and at its inner it is pivoted and secured to the bracket f' at f5.

my invention provides means by which a roller may be readily inserted or removed from the instrument and also quickly adjusted longitudinally into any desired position. The bearings described also provide durable and lightrunning devices for the purpose. v-
While I have shown my adjusting device for moving one roller longitudinally, it is apparent that the saine may be modified to some extent without departing from the spirit'of the invention and may be also applied to operating two rollers or to a series of rollers.
What I claim is- 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a roller, of a spring-actuated plunger axially engaging the roller at one end, a driving-chuck frame engaging the other end of said roller, a collar on said chuck-frame having ball-bearing on said frame, a lever pivoted at an intermediary point, one end of said lever being bifurcated, the bifurcated ends being pivoted to said collar, an adjusting-screw engaging the other end of said lever by means of which said driving-chuck may be moved toward or away from said roller, and means for driving said chuck-frame.
2.. In a device of the class described, the combination with two supporting-frames, of a roller disposed between said frames, a springactuated plunger mounted on one frame and vaxially engaging one end of said roller, a driving-chuck frame engaging the other end of said roller, said chuck-frame consisting of a shoulder portion and a bearing portion, a collar d engaging the bearing portion, a collar al disposed between the shoulder portion and the collar d* and having ball-bearing with said shoulder and collar, an axial bore through said chuck-frame, a slotted shaft extending into said bore, pins extending through said bearing portion and the slot through said shaft, said shaft having a square end, a journal-box mounted on said other support, the square end of said shaft passing through said bearing box adapted to turn therein, an outer and inner ring secured to said shaft and having ball-bearing against the sides of said journal-box, a gear-wheel mounted on the outer collar for driving said shaft and the chuck engaged thereby, a lever pivoted at an intermediary point, said lever having a bifurcated end, the ends of which are pivoted to the collar d, and an adjusting-screw engaging the other end of said lever and said other frame,whereby said chuck may be moved toward or away from said roller and longitudi.
