` Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. KEEP, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie, and State of NewYork, have invented an Improved- Shield and` Holdcr for Smoothing-Irons; and I do hereby declare that the following is,

a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of. this specificationl s I Figure 1I being a'top view ofthejshield lproper by itself.

The shield is composed essentially of'. a plate,'A, which may'be of sheet metal below, and lined with wood, or other' slow conductor of heat, above, as represented in the drawings, suilieient in sizerand suitable in shape i to cover the smoothing-iron, otnearly so, and thereby shield the hand of the personusing it from the'xadiation of heat from the'smoothing'iron, and from danger ot contact therewith; and a shank, B,situated centrally vover the plate A, at the proper distance.,l and in a direction parallel longitudinally lwith. the'lplate, for attaching the holder D Vto the shield. This shank is o'nnected with' the shield-plate A'by ancck, 6, which'is secured to the said plate by a anch, c, andrivets, d d, or by any other suitable means.

And, since the handles of different wsmoothing-,irons d ieri'n size, the

This eonstruetionof the shield-plate allows lit to be'placedin position `hy 'simply,sli ding it over the smoothing-iron, enibracingthe handle thereof close down to thc body. This'is very easily accomplished. f

Most properly-'the oblong'opening a enters at'the front end of the shieldplate,`snce itis most convenient to-shove the plate forward 'endyvise over .the smoothing`iron);4 But it-might enter' at the' baek'endandslide on backward, -or there might be'two suehvope'nings entering at one side of -the plate, so as to `embrace thetwo legs Also the opening might bencovered or,closed, after the shield is put in place, byta plate of 4metal or other material swinging or sliding over the plate A for the purpose of protecting the hand over the opening.

t The holder may 'be made oficloth, or any other proper flexible and slory'heat-condncting material@ If of cloth, it may be lined with cloth', or other material, and-stnfednvith cotton, Wool, heir; or other` suitnblesuhstance. It is provided with a sheath, loops, or cqpia'lent means of attachingit to the shank B offfthershield, the said shankbeing thin, so as not to interfere ti'ith the grasping ofthe handle, and the shank may have a holeor holes, as (ntf, for sewing or tasking the .holder thereto.
