TO ALL WHOM IT-MAY CONCERN: l j Be it known that I, LAWSN S.V WARNR., of Chicago, in the county of Cook, and'State of Illinois, haveinvented anew and improved Press for GoncreteBlocks; and- I (1o-hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, andexact description thereof, which will enable'otbers skilled in the artto make and -use the same, rcfer ,l
ence being had to the accompanying drawings, forming pazt of this specification.4 j
Figure l is a sectional view of my machine, the section being taken through the line I/gy, fig. 2.1,A
Figure 2 is another sectional view of the same, the section being taken through the line :c x, iig: 1.

This invention relates to the pressing of concrete blocks, so called, which are used for `buhling'puvrposes, and which arelower than commombrick, diering. also therefrom in character.
It consists of moulds or box'es, which are lled with the concreteimaterial, together with compound toggle or knee-joint levers, for actuating the follow-bottoms of the moulds upward,'t0 press the concrete material in a dense parallelopipedon or building-block. V i f i' In the accompanying plate of drawings, the general frame of the machine is sbown'at A. The sidesof the moulds are formed by the stout blocksb b. The ends of the moulds are formcd'bythaIt portionn'f the frame enclosed between the blocks 6, which latter are?. affixed to thc said frame as shown, by bolts, nails, or 4other suitable means.
The follow-bottoms are shown all), the extensions j of which rest upon theyupper ends of the toggle-bars E. These extensionsj are not attached to the said bars, but merely rest thereon, the bottom of the extension having a semicircular concavit'y,` to t upon the correspond-ing convexity of thebars, as shown, for the purpose of enabling the follow-bottoms to be raised after the block is pressed, and thus force the bottom ofthe pressed i block even with the top of the moulds for removal.
The lifting of the'follow-bottoms D to raise the blocks, as above mentioned, is accomplished by the lever l Y K, which has for its fulcrum the rod g.4 YThe lower endof this lever bifnrcates into two-branches, ZZ, which pass under .the rods a alixed between the extensions.; of the follow-bottoms, and thus `raise the latter when thc long arm K is depressed.- l v p A,
The operation of the compound toggle-joint, consisting of' the'togglc-bars E, F, G, and H, pivoted or hinged together :1s-shown at h and m, is obvious; and as the depression of the lever B brings the rouudedprojection Li to bear upon thejoint m, and thus bring the s'aid joint in line with the joints o and h, great power is brought to bear upon the joint h, which latterfin being brought in linewith the shaft I and follow-bottoms D, exerts a `suiiicient powerl to press the concrete-material into a dense 4and durable block.-
The bar F is ,not airixed to the shaft I, but works around on it., the lower end of the said bar being concave, to tit on the said shaft. Straps d hold the bar in contact with the shaft. A spring, -S, raises thc toggle-bars G- and I-I, and thereby lowers the follow-bottoms when the power is removed from the hand-lever B. The upper ends of the bars E are guided to moveV in a vertical line, by means of; pins or 'projections p working in slots i in the'frame A, as shown.
, -J is the sliding top, to vclose the mouldswhcn the block is being compressed.
In practice, a shaft bearing an eccentric may be employed to act upon the'joint, mor a number of machines may be'placed ina row, and a single shaft, bearing an eccentric for each joint, m, may be omployed,'thus accomplishing the manufacture of concrete-blocks with rapidity.
I claim as new, and desire to` secure by .Letters Patent-' The spring S, in combination with the toggle-bars H, Gr, E, and F, land follow-bottoms D, Vsubstantially as s'hownand described, for the purpose of lowering 'the follow-bottoms to their first position, all arranged asv set forth. Y
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this seventeenth day of January, 1868.
