UNITED STATES Patented December 20, 1.9041! PATENT OEEIcE.
SKlRT-SUPPORTER AND WAIST-RETAINER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 777,896, dated December 20, 1904.
Application filed February 12, 1904. Serial No. 193,260.
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN HAGLAND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skirt-Supporters and VVaist- Retainers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and easily-manipulated skirt and waist holder which is adapted to retain the skirt in its proper position, prevent the placket thereof accidentally coming open, and
at the same time prevent the shirt-waist from separating or riding above the skirt, much to the inconvenience and embarrassment of the wearer. This I accomplish by the means hereinafter fully described and as specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a rear view of a portion of a female figure, showing the placket of the skirt on the same open and exposing to view my invention and illustrating the manner of its application. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail of the plate, showing the pins for supporting the skirt in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is an end view of the plate; and Fig. 4 is a detail view, on enlarged scale, of the skirt-supporting pin.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the supporter-plate, having an upper portion a, substantially as shown in the drawings, and a lower portion B, preferably of less Width, which has downwardly-projecting lobes b b, that extend below the same. In the upper portion a of said plate and preferably near each side of the same I have provided vertically-elongated slots 0 0, through which a tape-belt O is threaded, as shown, which latter is clasped tightly about the waist of the wearer in such manner as to hold the plate about the center of the back. At a distance from each side edge of plateA corresponding to about one-fourth of the width of the same I provide suitable loops D D, which are adapted to receive the tangs of the skirt-pins, as will be hereinafter fully explained, and are preferably made by cutting two horizontal parallel slits (Z (Z in the plate and then stamping or punching out slightly the metal between the same. The outer edge of lobes b b are bent back substantially at right angles thereto to form lugs or cars E, which have alining holes 6 therein, through which the shaft of the waist-pin passes.
Removably secured to the belt of the skirt, preferably on each side or flap of the placketopening, is a pin F, which may be of the ordinary safety-pin construction, with the exception that at about the center of the back of the same it is provided with a downwardlyprojecting tang f, which is adapted to pass through one of the loops D in the upper portion of plate A. This tang is formed by making a detour at about the center of length of the wire constituting the back of the pin and then bending the same at right angles to the plane of said back portion and extending said detour below the shaft of the pin. The waistpin G is also of the ordinary safety-pin construction, but much larger and stronger than pins F and slightly elongated. The shaft 9 of this pin Gr passes through the holes 0 of the ears and between the lobes catches up the lower portion of the waist.
The operation of my invention is substantially as follows: Pin G is passed through the hole 0 of one of the ears E, then through a portion of the belt-band of the waist, and, lastly, through the hole 6 in the opposite ear, where it is hooked into its safety-loop. The belt C, having already been threaded through slots 0 of the plate, is passed around the waist of the wearer and tightly fastened in proper position. The pins F on each side of the flaps of the placket are then brought up and the tangsf thereof inserted into the respective loops D, formed in the plate. The shirt-Waist is thereby held down, the skirt-placket kept securely closed, and the skirt supported in a neat and attractive manner, so that it will not gape open and become unsightly at the back.
In order that the plate will more perfectly fit and conform to the curvature of the figure of the wearer, it has been found desirable to bend the plate A slightly, as shown at H in the drawings, Fig. 3. This plate, however,
may be of any desired shape and may be modified in any manner it may be found desirable so long as its cooperatlve use with pins F and G or their substantial equivalents is not materially affected.
What I claim as new is 1. A combined skirt-supporter and waistretainer comprising a plate provided with a slot at each side thereof; a tape threaded through said slots; means for supporting the skirt near the top of said plate; a retainingpin engaging said plate adapted to fasten into the lower portion of the waist; and eyes in the lower portion of said plate for attaching said pin thereto.
2. A combined skirt-supporter and waistretainer comprising a plate provided with a slot at each side of the same and loops mediate said slots; a tape threaded through said slots; means attached to the skirt engaging said loops; and ears projecting from the side edges of the lower portion of said plate; and a retaining-pin engaged with said ears and adapted to hold a portion of the waist thereto.
3. A combined skirt-supporter and waistretainer, comprising a concavo-conveX plate having a slot at each side of the same and loops mediate said slots; a tape threaded through said slots; means attached to the skirt engaging saidloops; a retaining-pin engaging said plate adapted to fasten into the lower portion of the waist; and means in the lower portion of said plate for attaching said pin thereto.
4. A combined skirt-supporter and waistretainer comprising a plate provided with a slot at each side thereof; a tape threaded through said slots; means for supporting a skirt near the top of said plate; lobes projecting downwardly from the lower portion of said plate; ears projecting inward at right angles to said lobes; and a retaining-pin engaged with said ears for holding a portion of the Waist between the same.
5. A combined skirt-supporter and waistretainer comprising a plate provided with a slot at each side of the same and loops mediate said slots; a tape threaded through said slots; means attached to the skirt engaging said loops; lobes projecting downwardly from the lower portion of said plate; ears projecting inward at right angles to said lobes; and a retaining-pin engaged with said ears for holding a portion of the waist between the same. 1
6. A combined skirt-supporter and waistretainer comprising a concavo-conveX plate provided with a-slot at each side of the same and loops mediate said slots; a tape threaded through said slots; means attached to the skirt engaging said loops; lobes projecting downwardly from the lower portion of said plate, each projecting inward at right angles to said lobes; and a retaining-pin engaged with said ears for holding a portion of the waist between the same.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of February, 1904.
JOHN HAGLAND.
