To all whom it vim/ concern:
Be it known that we, Passer J FIGKINGER and SHERMAN J. BLAKE, citizens of the United States, residing at Conneaut, county of Ashtabula, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckets, of which the following is a specification accompanied by drawings.
The invention relates particularly to buckets for handling solid and semisolid materials, either in dredging operations or in the general handling of dry or wet materials.
The objects of the invention are to improve upon such buckets and simplify their construction with increased strength and ciliciencyof operation.
Further objects of the invention will hereinafter appear; and to these ends the invention consists of apparatus embodying the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts having the general mode of operation substantially as hereinafter fully described and claimed in this specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of apparatus embodying the invention, and Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional plan view of the upper portion of the machine, taken through the slides (Jr and cylinder. 4 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of a portion of the machine, taken through the cylinder, the slides Ur, and guides D. Fig. 5 is a detail top plan view of the cylinder-head, showing the pivots K for the arms E. Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional detail view, taken through the slides 1).
Referring to the drawings, A represents the leg or frame of a suitable support for the apparatus embodying the invention, and B in this instance is a lateral t'oot projecting from the lower end of the legA. The bucket-sec tions U are in this instance of the form and construction shown, and operative connections are provided for operating the same in accordance with this improvement. suitable and convenient construction which operates el'liciently and well. As shown, a h ydraulic cylinder F is slidably mounted in the slides (:i, which form a vertical guide upon the leg A. The piston-rod H, which is provided with a suitable piston, in this instance is connected to the stationary bracket 1, supported from the leg A. Pivot-pins J are provided upon the cylinder F for pivoting the upper ends K of the guidedever arms E to the cylinder, and according to this construction as the cylinder is actuated the upper ends of the guide-lever arms E will be operated, although the invention is not to be understood as limited to aconstruction in which the cylinder moves, as the piston and pistonrod may be connected to operate the guidelevers, if desired, in which case the cylinder will form the stationary guide member. The guide members E are in this instance provided intermediate their ends with rollers L, secured in blocks L, which travel in the horizontally-extended guides or slots 1) and are guided thereby, whereby when the upper ends K of the guide members E are moved downward the block L and rollers L will be moved outwardly in the guides l) and the bucket-sections U will be separated or opened. Means are provided for closing the bucketsections after they have been opened, in this instance suitable chains 0 or other connectors being arranged to operate the luiclmt-sections when it is desired to close them. The chains, as shown, are connected to be actuated by suitable means, in this instance shown as a hydraulic cylinder 1, to the piston-rod id, of which the upper ends oi the chains are connected by means of the rod R and link S. The lower ends of the chains are connected by links T to the'bucket-sections, and in this instance both the links T and the lower ends of the guide-levers E are pivotally connected to the bucket-sections, although other forms of construction may be provided, if desired, for it is obvious that the guide-levers E may be rigidly secured to the bucket-sections. Cross-heads U are provided extending transversely of the bucket-sections, affording bearings for the outer ends of the links T, and guide-rollers V are provided in suitable brackets upon the lateral foot B, over which rollers the chains 0 pass. lVhen the bucket-sections have been opened, it will be seen that they may be closed by means of the chains connected to be operated from the hydraulic cylinder P. By curving the guides D, as shown, the op eration of the apparatus is facilitated and the desired sweep to the bucket is obtained.
Obviously some features of the invention may be used without others, and the invention may be embodied in widely-varying forms.
Therefore, without limiting the invention to the construction shown and described nor enumerating equivalents, we claim, and desireto obtain by Letters Patent, the following:
1. A bucket comprising two sections, guide levers or supports projecting up from the respective bucket-sections and pivotall y secured together, a vertical guide for the pivotal connection of said guide-levers,horizontal guides, and bearings carried by the guide-levers and movable in said horizontal guides, for substantially the purposes set forth.
2. The combination with a frame, of a bucket comprising two sections, upwardlyprojecting guide -levers on the respective bucket-sections pivotally connected together and to a support, a vertical guide on the frame to guide the movement of said support, bearings carried by the guide-levers between their ends, horizontally-slotted guides on the frame to receive said bearings,.said slots being inclined upward at their inner ends, for substantially the purposes set forth.
3. A bucket comprising two sections having guide-levers connected thereto, projecting upwardly therefrom and pivotally connected together, a support for said pivotal connection, bearings on the guide-levers between their ends, horizontal guides for said rollers, and a vertical guide for said support, for substantially the purposes set forth.
4. The combination with a frame, of a bucket comprising two sections, guide-levers secured to the bucket sections projecting above the same and pivotally connected together, a support on said guide-levers, said frame having vertical grooves or slots in which said support on the guide-levers moves, bearings on said guide-levers between their ends,said frame also having horizontal grooves or slots in which said bearings move, and means for forcing the bucket-sections apart and pulling them together, for substantially the purposes set forth.
5. The combination of a frame, bucket-sections, guide-levers connected to operate the bucket-sections, and curved horizontal guides for the levers, for substantially the purposes set forth.
6. The combination of a frame and bucketsections, of guide-levers connected to operate the bucket-sections, and pivotally connected together, curved horizontal guides for the levers, and hearings on the levers operating in said guides, for substantially the purposes set forth.
