Description
lhvrrn ff Patented December 6, 1904.
l F Fl @Ft FRANK A. VVARDVELL, OF METHUEN, MASSACHUSETTS.
ILOUWEWPlCKEW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 776,972, dated December 6, 1904.
Application filed May 28, 1904.
Be itknown that I, FRANK A. VVARDWELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Methuen, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loom -Pickers, of which the following is a specification.
rl`his invention relates to improvements in loom-pickers, and it is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein-n Figure 1 is a top plan of the improved loom-picker, partly shown in section. Fig. 2 is a section en the line 2 2 shown in Fig. l.
Fig. 3 isa section on the line 3 3 shown in Fig. 1. Fig. l is a sectlonal View showing a rnodilication of the picker-head. Fig. 5 is a view showing in side and end elevation the bushing secured to the perforated frame portion; and Fig. 6 is an end view of Fig. l, showing the picker-head removed.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
The invention is preferably applicable to what are termed drop-box pickers for looms in which a plurality of shuttles are used; and it consists of a preferably metal frame A, which is guided on a horizontal spindle B, forming a part of a loom of the kind above mentioned. The said metal frame A is preferably provided with a perforation A', through which is inserted the usual pickerstaff (l, which is actuated in the usual manner for reciprocating the picker during the weaving operation.
Through the frame A is made a longitudinal perforation in which is inserted a sleeve D, preferably made of rawhide, metal, or other suitable material, which is guided on the horizontal spindle B. In practice I make on the ends of said sleeve D suitable lips or flanges Z (Z, adapted to be received in end recesses A A in the frame A and secured to the latter by means of rivets d d or suitable fastening devices, as shown in the drawings.
integral with the frame A are made side projections A3A3, each of which has on its interior portion a eut-away recess as, as shown in Fig. 1. The projections A3 A3 are con- Serial No. 210.233. (No model.)
nected by a horizontal reduced web AI', which is made integral with the side projections Ag A To said projections N and web A' is secured the laminated picker-head, preferably made of rawhide, leather, or suitable material, The said picker-head is composed of a middle rawhide or other suitable sheet F, having end projections c e fitting into the recesses a3 ai; on the interior of the frame projections A3 A3. On opposite side of the middle sheet E are located rawhide or other suitable sheets F F, having end projections ff fitting into the recesses ai on the interior of the frame projections A:3 A3, as shown. On the outside of each sheet F is located a filler Ur, preferably secured to the said sheet F in any suitable or desirable manner. rlhe side sheets F F are riveted or otherwise secured in a suitable manner to the web Ai, and l have for this purpose shown rivets H H going' through perforations in said sheets F and web A1. For the purpose of still further securing the sheets F to the web A, l make on the latter projections af al, integral with said web, adapted to lit into corresponding perforations in the said sheets F. For the purpose of securing' the laminated sheets together I inclose them with a sheet or cover I, preferably made of rawhide or other suitable material, the ends of which are secured to the laminated sheets FJ F F by means of rivets vi ai, as shown. For the purpose of securing the cover to the laminated sheets lt F F and fillings GHG they are firmly secured together by means of a rivet K shown in the drawings. By this arrangement I provide the frame with a compact, strong, and durable picker-head that can readily be made in parts and secured to the frame in a very substantial manner. lf said piclenliead should become defaced or broken, a new one can readily and at a low cost be attached to the frame. By lining the perforated head with a removable metal or rawhide sleeve or bushing l), as shown, the spindle B, as well as the perforation in the frame, is prevented from being worn or defaced. lf the bushing should wear out, it can readily be replaced with another at srnall expense.
ln Fig. l l have shown a modified forni of the laminated picker-head, which consists of IOO a preferabljT rawhide strap L, Wound around the web A* and middle sheet E and secured to said parts by suitable rivets or other similar fastening' devices.
What I Wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim is- 1. A loom-picker, comprising' a frame having a perforation to receive the picker-staff and means for `guiding said frame on the spindle, horizontal projections on said frame and a Web made integral therewith and a laminated picker-head secured to said web and an inclosing band or cover secured to said head.
2. A loom-picker, comprising a frame, having' a perforation to receive the picker-stai?, side projections and an intermediate Web, made integral with said frame, and a laminated picker-head, composed of sheets snpported on said web and having end lips or projections supported in recesses in the frame, and attached to the Web, and inclosing" band or cover secured to the laminated sheets of the picker-head.
3. A loom-picker, comprising' a frame having a perforation to receive the picker-staff,
side projections and a web made integral with said frame, in combination with a laminated picker-head secured to said Web for the purpose set fortl 4. A loom-picker comprising a frame having' a perforation to receive the picker-staff, side projections and a reduced Web made integral with said frame, a laminated pickerhead, trnnnions or side projections on said web, and recesses on the interior of the frame projections adapted to receive the laminated picker-head, and means for securing said picker-head to said projections and Web, as specified.
5. A loom-picker, consisting of sheets having end projections, a frame having recesses adapted to receive the said projections, a web on the frame and means for securing said sheets to the frame as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have aiiiXed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
