PATENT OFFICE.
MOUTHPIECE FOR MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 776,785, dated December 6, 1904.
Application filed April 4, 1904. Serial No. 201,370. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, PETER F. KRUsE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sioux City, in the county of Woodbury and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mouthpieces for Musical Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in mouthpieces for musical instruments, and more particularly to improvements in mouthpieces for metallic wind instruments.
The object of my invention is to provide an adjustable auxiliary mouthpiece or rest to afford a brace to the player by giving him additional strength and also protection for the teeth.
My invention also provides for an adjustable mouthpiece whereby the instrument may be adapted to the conformation of the lips and teeth-that is, so that the auxiliary or rest portion may be adjusted to fit a player who has either prominent or receding teeth,
W so as to afford a perfect and complete adjustment and fit of the instrument to the inclividual player.
I attain the objects of my invention by the device shown in the drawings hereto annexed, in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a mouthpiece provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is an end elevation, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section, of a mouthpiece provided with my improvements.
The mouthpiece 1 is of the usual type and form, having the mouthpiece or contact-piece proper, 2, and the shoulder 3. Upon this shoulder 3 I cut a fine thread, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. Taking over this thread is my improvement, which consists of an internally-threaded collar 6, which is threaded to the shoulder 3 and a sufficiently tight fit made between the threads so that the collar 6 will not turn easily. Integral with the collar 6 are braces 5, which extend outwardly, as shown, and at their outer ends are integral or may be adapted to the auxiliary mouthpiece a. By reference to Fig. 2 it will be seen that between the periphery of the mouthpiece 2 and the auxiliary mouthpiece 4 there is an annular space which gives ventilation for the lips.
By screwing the auxiliary mouthpiece back and forth upon the thread of the shoulder 3 the face of the auxiliary mouthpiece may be made to lie in the plane of the mouthpiece proper, 2, or in advance or in the rear of it, according as the particular player may desire. By simply turning this auxiliary mouthpiece upon the thread as aforesaid the instrument may be nicely adjusted to fit the teeth and lip conformation of the individual player, and since this auxiliary mouthpiece is of larger diameter, and therefore has a larger bearing upon the lips and face of the player, it affords protection in the event of accident.
Having thus described my invention and its method of operation, what I claim is The combination of a mouthpiece proper, an externally threaded shoulder on said mouthpiece, an auxiliary mouthpiece comprising a mouthpiece-rim, supports for said rim, an internally-threaded collar secured to said supports, said internally threaded collar engaging with said externally-threaded shoulder.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two witnesses. PETER F. KRUSE. Witnesses:
E. R. BosLEY. S. BROWN.
