SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 775,793, dated November 22, 1904.

To alt w/wm, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. BEVANS, a citizen of the United States,residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ordnance; and I do hereby declare the fol-lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvement in ordnance; and the object is to provide an improved training-gear for guns by the use of which the gun may be rapidly and readily swung from one point to another to train the same.
With the above object in View the invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described, particularly pointed out in the claims, and clearly illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gun and mount having my invention applied thereto;

Referring now more particularly to said drawings, 4 designates the fixed portion of the mount, having an annular recess 5 formed in its outer circumference adjacent to its upper endto receive the training-circle composed of sections 6 and 7, hinged together at one end, as indicated at 8, and having their opposite ends oppositely screw-threaded, the one right-hand and the other left-hand threads receiving a locking-screw 9, having its receptive ends oppositely screw-threaded. Attached to this screw is an operating-lever 10, the parts being so arranged that when said lever is lowered thelocking-screw is operated to approximate the ends of the sections 6 and 7 of the training-circle and clamp the latter in said recess, and when said lever is raised the screw is operated to separate the sections and release the training-circle, so that it may be swung in said recess around the amount by said lever, for the purpose presently to be set forth.
Section 7 of the training-circle is provided with a small number of gear-teeth 11, meshing with the worm-gear 12, now commonly used in training gears for ordnance, said worm-gear, as usual, being connected with the hand-wheel 12 by gears 13, 14, and 15, said gears, hand-wheel, and worm-gear 12 being carried'by the movable part 16 of the mount.
In the ordinary construction of traininggear, the worm-gear 12 meshes with a gear cut entirely around the fixed portion of the mount, which is an expensive construction, and the operation of training the gun is very tedious and consumes considerable time, as said handwheel must make a complete revolution for every tooth of the gear carried by mount.
With my improved training-gear when it is desired to train the gun the lever is lifted, releasing the training-circle and said circle swung around the fixed portion of the mount by said lever, this rotating of the trainingcircle causing the teeth 11 thereof to push against the Worm 12, and thus effect the swing of the upper portion of the mount and the gun carried thereby. As soon as the gun has been trained approximately the lever is dropped, and its weight is sufficient to hold the circle tightly clamped to the fixed portion of the mount. The hand-wheel 12 may then be used to give to the gun any additional movement that may be desired in the usual manner, the worm-gear 12 being in mesh with the gear 11 of the circle.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A training-gear for ordnance comprising a training member rotatable about a fixed por tion of the mount in a plane at right angles to the vertical axis of the mount, provided with gear-teeth and comprising two sections pivotally secured together at one end, means carried by the opposite ends of said sections for approximating said ends and clamping the training member to the mount, a gear carried by the movable portion of the mount meshing with the gear-teeth of the training member, and means carried by the movable portion of the mount for operating the gear. carried thereby.
2. A training-gear for ordnance comprising a training member rotatable about a fixed portion of the mount in a plane at right angles to the vertical axis of the mount, a pivoted lever for rotating said training member arranged to lock said member to the mount when moved in one direction and to release the same when moved in the reverse direction, and coacting members carried by said training member and movable portion of the mount whereby the rotation of the training member about the fixed portion of the mount effects the rotation of the movable portion of the mount.
3. A training-gear for ordnance comprising a training member rotatable about a fixed portion of the mount in a plane at right angles to the vertical axis of the mount and provided with gear-teeth, a pivoted lever for rotating said training member arranged to lock said member to the mount when moved in one direction and to release the same when moved in a reverse direction, a gear carried by the movable portion of the mount meshing with the gear-teeth of the training member, and means carried by the movable portion of the mount for operating the gear carried thereby.
4:. A training-gear for ordnance, comprising a training member rotatable about the fixed portion of the mount in a plane at right angles to the vertical axis of the mount comprising two members pivotally connected at one end and having their opposite ends oppositely screw-threaded, a locking-screw threaded to fit the threads of said members, a lever attached to said screw for rocking the same to separate or approximate the ends of said members, and coacting members carried by the training member and movable part of the mount whereby the rotation of the former effects the rotation of the latter.
5. A training-gear for ordnance, comprising a training member rotatable about the fixed portion of the mount in a plane at right angles to the vertical axis of the mount comprising two members pivotally connected at one end and having their opposite ends oppositely screw-threaded, a locking-screw threaded to fit the threads of said members, a lever attached to said screw for rocking the same to separate or approximate the ends of said members, said training member being provided with gear-teeth, a worm-gear carried by the movable portion of the mount meshing with the gear of the training member, a hand-operable member carried'fby the movable portion of the mount, and an operative connection between said member and wormgear.
